This page!

This yard of ale to (WT-en) Denis for fostering community spirit by proposing and creating this page. Cheers! • • • (WT-en) Peter (Southwood) Talk 09:26, 30 October 2010 (EDT)

Thanks, Peter. Honestly, I've initiated the page for a selfish reason of finding more motivation for myself to get published my travel notes I bring with me from every vacation, several times a year.
This is also my personal milestone, a first serious community page I've created at Wikivoyage (Project:How to describe yourself doesn't count). Managing the whole consensus thing is still something to master for me--at least this page proves for me that there's some progress with that skills.
And the whole undertaking was impossible to implement without your elaboration, complimentary ideas and wording--plus all the input and support from all those who took part in the discussion. Cheers! --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 16:55, 30 October 2010 (EDT)
Hey, you are also part of the community, no harm in boosting your own morale a bit too. • • • (WT-en) Peter (Southwood) Talk 10:22, 12 November 2010 (EST)

A third dive site promoted to Star

Virtual drinks all round (or alternative celebratory substance of your preference) to mark the third Cape Town dive site to reach Star status

  • Personally I believe it's worth a barnstar to create 3 star articles in a row (not mentioning to have a queue of several dozens to come). --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 17:25, 12 November 2010 (EST)
  • A huge round of applause! Or, since we're underwater, I guess a big thumbs to our partners in the scuba gear. (WT-en) PerryPlanet Talk 18:20, 12 November 2010 (EST)
  • Thanks folks, but don't hold your breath for the "several dozens to come", the production rate is unlikely to go up very much. I will try to have one in the pipeline whenever possible. The good news is that I may have managed to persuade a couple of other divers to start surveying. The bad news is that they will probably send their raw data to me to make into maps. (not really bad news ;-) • • • (WT-en) Peter (Southwood) Talk 00:48, 13 November 2010 (EST)

Work on Bangkok

According to DennisYurkin, it's time to celebrate! ;-) I've worked for months on Bangkok and all the districts are now in a decent guide status, and have maps, with two articles at star status :D. Thanks for everyone who contributed and helped, the next virtual round is on you ^^ --(WT-en) globe-trotter 02:37, 28 November 2010 (EST)

  • Well done, Globe-trotter! Keep up the good work ;-) • • • (WT-en) Peter (Southwood) Talk 12:40, 28 November 2010 (EST)

First dive guide reaches Star

For me a huge milestone today. Regional dive guide Diving the Cape Peninsula and False Bay has reached star after hundreds of hours of work. This guide was my original reason for joining the Wikivoyage community and it has been a major experience. The guide was originally intended to be published as a web-site, then I was persuaded that a print book would be better, but after a few years of work I came to the conclusion that a co-operative website would be best in the long run, and since Wikipedia, which would have been my choice, does not allow "original research", and the material was almost all original research, I looked further and found Wikivoyage. I spent a day or two reading through the policies and procedures and realised this was the place. The rest is history (for anyone mad enough to research it, as the whole mind-numbing record is here). Anyway, I plunged forward as was recommended, and with the help and advice of a number of you folk, have got the main article up to star. It is far from finished, but the quality is way better than I expected. The following Wikivoyagers are particularly due thanks for their advice and support.

And in no particular order:

Cheers! • • • (WT-en) Peter (Southwood) Talk 13:45, 28 November 2010 (EST)

Between the rounds, would you consider accepting a barnstar for your tremendous work? --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 16:39, 29 November 2010 (EST)
Thanks Denis, yes of course. I didn't know one had the option of refusal :-) • • • (WT-en) Peter (Southwood) Talk 12:35, 30 November 2010 (EST)
Ironically, while Wikipedia doesn't allow original research, I would think that your Wikivoyage articles would now be a sufficient reference to allow inclusion there :) In any case, I'm sure I'm not alone in expressing how glad everyone at Wikivoyage is that you decided to contribute here, and how tremendously impressive your dedication has been in creating some amazing guides. Kudos to you! -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 22:43, 29 November 2010 (EST)
Ryan, that would be a bit of a joke, but I am not sure it would apply. Anyway, I dont plan to move away while Wikivoyage remains reasonably editable. I like the concept and the fellow travellers. • • • (WT-en) Peter (Southwood) Talk 12:35, 30 November 2010 (EST)

Maryland reaches guide status

Crab cake and a cold Natty Boh

A long time goal, spearheaded by the Project:Maryland Expedition has finally come to fruition after tons of really hard work: Maryland is the first U.S. state to reach guide status! When you consider the huge number of sub-destinations (especially linked destinations from each subregion!) that needed to be improved to at least usable status, this was really difficult! I think, clearly, it's appropriate to celebrate with a jumbo lump crab cake and some Natty Boh. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Peterfitzgerald (talkcontribs)

Nice work, Will we be seeing a Star nomination sometime? Seriously, though, I know the feeling. Getting the linked articles up to standard is often the largest part of the work, and not easily appreciated by people who were not involved in the project • • • (WT-en) Peter (Southwood) Talk 02:43, 10 January 2011 (EST)

The Primary U.S. Interstate Highway System Routeboxed!

As of now, all one and two-digit routes of the U.S. Interstate Highway system (which makes up most of the actual inter-state highways, seeing that most three-digit routes serve just one metro area) have been added to the routebox system!

Of course, there's still a lot of work to be done on the routeboxes - there's some of those three-digit interstates, and all those U.S. Highways, turnpikes, and what not - but for the moment I think we can point to this as a major accomplishment for the routebox system. (WT-en) PerryPlanet Talk 14:22, 4 March 2011 (EST)

Pagebanner rollout

I thought we should all kick back and celebrate our progress with the pagebanner. It's taken a tremendous amount of teamwork and collaboration to get this far with the banner rolled out across the site and 2,448 articles (9.5% !) already having a custom banner. This keg should help us with the 23,000 or so remaining banners. Cheers! :-) -Shaundd (talk) 03:51, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ten years of editing

I made my first edit on WT ten years ago this hour. It was a modest effort, but has stood the test of time – the edit is still in the article in its entirety. I'm not sure if I am the longest-standing contributor still editing actively (Evan Prodromou just popped in for a rare and brief visit the other day). I am just having a quiet drink; I won't be celebrating too much – I'm feeling a bit dismayed about some of the recent events here. Never mind, I plan to be still travelling and contributing ten years from now. So, have a quiet one with me, then get on and improve this travel guide – there is still lots to do. Nurg (talk) 04:22, 5 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Until a couple of months ago we had somewhere around 150 articles in mainspace that had a {{merge}} tag on them, and a significant number of these articles had been tagged for five years or more. As of today that number is down to zero - Greater Poland was the last article that required merging - and the site is now hopefully a cleaner place with less duplication across articles. There are still a few project-space articles tagged for merging, but I'll leave that cleanup job to someone else :) Category:Articles needing style fixes currently stands at 285 articles if anyone wants to join in the next great cleanup challenge... -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:50, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A usable guide to Canada

Swept in from the pub

As of today, all 682 city- and park-level articles in Canada are at usable status or above. There are no outlines or stubs left. (The region articles are another matter.) Now, any reader looking into a destination in Canada will find an article that has useful information for them. (See Wikivoyage:Canada Expedition for more information.)

So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip to Canada! Ground Zero (talk) 20:28, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fantastic job! An enormous achievement, quite literally.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 21:12, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Not to burden you with any more work (since you've definitely done enough), but now the city articles are done, it will make upgrading the region articles easier. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 22:16, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations! And your suggestion is tempting (but now how am I going to decide which place to visit?). WhatamIdoing (talk) 04:18, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You gave me a thought. What if we created short pages giving people information about, based on what people want, where they want to go. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 14:34, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
How would those be different from country guides, region guides, etc.? Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:00, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe a collection of mini-itineraries might be fun. So "Try this if you want this side of the country", "Think about that if you're traveling with school-age kids", "LGBT folks who want something other than Montreal could consider...", "Train buffs obviously need to..." WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:28, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, that would be fine. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:30, 19 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
We do have topics guides to Canada, including Driving in Canada, Rail travel in Canada, and Across Canada by train. I'd encourage anyone who is interested to start a new one. I'm going to work on the region articles as they are (or should be) a way of figuring out where to go. In a country the size of Canada, travel is also a matter of geography. Category:Orphaned articles down to zero articles

Adding links to all of the orphaned articles on Wikivoyage was the task in this month's Collaboration of the Month. There were 120 of these lonely articles but within half a month we managed to add at least one link to every one of these pages (as a minimum the parent region but also from other articles that already mention the destination). While there have been first cotms that have been successfully completed in a month, this is the first one I remember where we were successful in less than 3 weeks. Well done to Traveler100 and everyone else involved! Gizza (roam) 11:02, 18 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Brilliant new article: Western food in Asia

Foodies rejoice, and a toast to User:The dog2 for thinking up the new article Western food in Asia! In just one week it's gotten contributions from a number of editors and has already grown to 42 kbytes. It's a wonderful idea for a travel topic, and personally I really enjoyed doing research for content. I want to give a shout out to everybody else who worked on the article too, especially Pashley, Bigpeteb, Ikan Kekek and OhanaUnited.
