Toronto district maps[edit]

Hi, Shaun! The new maps on Toronto look great, but I have one concern. The pastel colors you used make it a little bit hard to see the white streets. Would you consider using slightly darker shades to improve the contrast? LtPowers (talk) 13:24, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, thumbnails take a while to regenerate sometimes. It frustrates a lot of people. (See commons:COM:FAQ#PURGE.) One workaround is to change the thumbnail size displayed in the article by one pixel. LtPowers (talk) 14:09, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hope[edit]

i count hwy 1 west through the fraser valley and hwy 1north through the canyon as different hwys. Plus 3, ,5 and 7 terminate or start in Hope. Maybe there is a better way to say there are 5 main choices to drive out of town. Article said" several" before. JadeDragon (talk) 10:23, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

NZ maps[edit]

The North Island map looks great!

When you come to do the SI map, are you able to have 3 levels of blob size for the settlements?

If so, my suggestion would be to have the four cities with population's above 40,000 [1] ie: CHC, Dunedin, Invercargill and Nelson at level 1 maximum blob size (or, alternatively, the three cities with population's above 50,000 w:Demographics_of_New_Zealand#Geographic_locations ie: CHC, Dunedin and Nelson)

and then Blenheim, Westport, Greymouth, Wanaka, Timaru, Oamaru, Queenstown at level 2 medium blob size

and finally those settlements of less than 10,000 population together with features that are notable to travellers: Picton, Kaikoura, Te Anau at level 3 minimum blob size. Except for "Westland National Park" I would keep all the non-settlement markings that are on the current map but, if room allows, add Moeraki Boulders. I would remove the "Blue Blobs" for Kahurangi, Aoraki Mt Cook, Fiordland and Arthur's Pass National Parks since the green areas and positioning of the text should be enough to locate them.

Since "Westland National Park" is not well known to tourists and the Franz Josef Glacier now has that bloody great hole in it that means it may not ever again re-establish its pre-eminence, I would also suggest replacing that legend with "Fox Glacier" -- Alice 03:05, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the lovely new map of The South Island of New Zealand! -- Alice 08:14, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Hey Shaundd. I also think your two new maps are awesome. I noticed on some of the maps that you have created a new compass style. Was that a decision you made or was there a discussion somewhere? I'm not criticising it; I actually like it very much! What I am proposing is possibly a larger community discussion where we can develop a new icon/colour scheme for our maps that differentiates us from WT and brings about some set standards. Possibly based on our new logo. Thoughts? JamesA >talk 05:56, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, let me know once you've made a proposal somewhere as I'd love to chip in. Not only should we have a slight redesign of our symbols/style, but also a standardisation. Many aspects of our maps still change frequently for no good reason such as the styling of the legend. Hopefully we can clarify a clear set of symbols and provide a file that makes it easy to append them. JamesA >talk 10:20, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sierra Leone[edit]

Thanks again for Namibia, I don't see any issue on that. A question on the country in the subject. Take a look at this. Before "landing" to this article I've found 4 sub-articles: one for each Sierra's region, so I've created a vary basic map to show the country divided this. Now, I've seen that en:Sierra doesn't have this division. Do you think that it worth for you to create a map divided in this way or not? --Andyrom75 (talk) 16:44, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm jumping in, but I've been meaning to do this for some time. I would only make one change to the official scheme, and call the "Western Area" the more familiar "Freetown Peninsula." --Peter Talk 03:54, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, I was wondering what the status of that region discussion was, just hadn't had a chance to post a comment on the talk page yet. Do you want to update the map for the regions? I'm not fussed either way, I can probably get it done for next weekend. -Shaundd (talk) 03:59, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Have you and Peter come up with a decision on the Sierra Leone's map? --Andyrom75 (talk) 14:54, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I've been busy with a few other things. It will probably be next week before I can get to the map. Cheers -Shaundd (talk) 04:25, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok great, thanks a lot for the update! --Andyrom75 (talk) 08:42, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Shaun, have you started on this yet? If not, let me know, and I'll do it tonight. --Peter Talk 23:55, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've done this now, by the way. --Peter Talk 06:15, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Polar bears[edit]

Hey Shaun, you mentioned that you were looking for a good polar bear pic for the lead image of Manitoba. I have (finally) uploaded my favorite polar bear pics from my Churchill trip last November, so please feel free to look to see whether there's anything that would work at commons:Category:Ursus maritimus in Churchill, Manitoba. --Peter Talk 06:15, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

TocTree extension[edit]

Hi Roland, I'm working on creating a horizontal TOC for English Wikivoyage (an example is here). I have it working so only top-level headings show (==Get in== shows, but not ===By car===), but the TOC still places a [+]. I think this is related to the TocTree extension. Do you know if it is possible to hide the [+] for a horizontal TOC, but show the [+] for a normal TOC? Thanks. -Shaundd (talk) 16:27, 10. Apr. 2013 (CEST) (Shaundd on :en)

The JavaScript cannot easily distinguish between horizontal or vertical TOCs. The JavaScript is part of the TocTree extension. In my original script, the toggle symbol is spanned by a span tag with the class "toggleSymbol" so you can hide the symbol with css in the following manner: .hlist .toggleNode {display:none}. With additional css you can optimize the TOC. --RolandUnger (talk) 16:42, 10. Apr. 2013 (CEST)
That's awesome. Thanks for the help. -Shaundd (talk) 01:54, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Shaun. I don't think there is a conflict of interest regarding you voting in support for Traveler's bot. The rules don't refer to any such conflict of interest, so it should be fine. As such, I think it's important we get them implemented now and keep some momentum in the project! JamesA >talk 07:10, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Great, the implementation is done thanks to Traveler100. I guess it's just a matter of adding banner images now, and looking for difficult cases/glitches? Also, are we going to add the template to the Austria article itself? JamesA >talk 08:06, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are you ready to copy the current version at User:Shaundd/Sandbox2 over to {{pagebanner}} (with the title and titleicons boxes)? If so, I think it's time for a pub notice, and to implement the banner sitewide. --Peter Talk 18:32, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just about ready. It needs to be tweaked a bit to fit within the existing template and common.css needs to be updated as well. I can take care of that tonight. -Shaundd (talk) 19:26, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Barncompass[edit]

The Wikivoyage Barncompass
I've mostly been following the page banner work from afar, but you've done a tremendous job in working through the technical hurdles of a horizontal TOC and getting the icons to work with the template. The new banners will be a big improvement in article layout, so here's a conglomeration of pixels in the shape of a compass/star as a token of appreciation! -- Ryan • (talk) • 05:11, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was just about to give you one of these myself, but I've been beaten to it! Either way, many congratulations on doing this - the banners look fantastic! --Nick (talk) 15:40, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Common.css & classes grouping[edit]

Hi Shaundd, In it:voy I've organized common.js in "modules" through the command importScript('MediaWiki:xxx.js');.

As per your knowledge, exits a similar command to do the same in the common.css?

Let me know, --Andyrom75 (talk) 06:12, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Shaundd, you got the point, import into the common.css external css files. I've asked you because I've seen you were one of the major updater on en:voy. Do you know someone that can help me on that? (also telling me, stop trying it's not possible :-)) --Andyrom75 (talk) 06:18, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks, I'll drop few words on them. --Andyrom75 (talk) 07:40, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks![edit]

Thanks for the info about Pagebanner. I tried it at Greek Wikivoyage and it works. However, sometimes a "+" appears as if the reader, by clicking on it, would see more info in the horizontal TOC, but nothing appears (fro example 1, 2). Any advice? Thanks in advance!-- Alien ? 16:47, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's OK now, it disappeared. Thanks again for the help-- Alien ? 08:12, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pagebanner double title.[edit]

In Wikivoyage_talk:Banner_Expedition#Tweaking the Geo template I've provided a patch for the double title issue. To implement it, the two highlighted lines should be inserted into commons.js, but I've seen that no reply has come on that thread. It's just a laspe or because someone is trying to solve it in another way? --Andyrom75 (talk) 13:07, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

you are welcome :). The patch works fine and you have just to insert those two lines into commons.js. I've waited to insert them in it:voy because I'd like to keep the templates and their behavious as much similar as possible between it:voy and en:voy to avoid rework when one of the two is upgraded. Considering that you are going to update it here, I'll do it right now in it:voy, so you can also see how it works. --Andyrom75 (talk) 16:04, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just one note. In it:voy I need only the first JS instruction because the icon map is managed differently, but here you need both the instructions. I've just implemented the patch in it:voy. --Andyrom75 (talk) 16:13, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Playing with the pagebanner[edit]

Hi Shaun!

I've been trying to create a page for the proposed 'My Wikivoyage section of the site', using banners as buttons. I'd uses images normally, but the banners are the only things I know that scale properly! It seems to be working at the moment, but whenever I add |link=SOMETHING| to the stripped down template, the banner stops scaling in mobile view. I don't suppose you've got any ideas why that might be happening? The page in question is here.

Thanks very much!

Newfoundland/Labrador region map[edit]

The yellow line for the Trans-Labrador Highway needs to be updated (as of 2009) on Image:Nfld regions map.png to indicate that a primitive gravel highway has been forced through the (410km with no fuel or services) section between Goose Bay and Cartwright Junction. An incredibly awkward place to break down, but the road does exist; the ferry from Lewisporte now primarily hauls freight from Cartwright further north to remote coastal Innu villages which remain otherwise inaccessible. Peggys Cove[edit]

I'd used {{cautionbox}} on Peggys Cove#Stay safe because there has been one death and one near miss in the last few months. This is getting close to Template:Warningbox#When to use, although the area has long been posted with huge signs. K7L (talk) 06:09, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's not better... it's great! :-) Thanks a lot for your effort. I would add just few minor comments.

  • Maybe is just a problem of my eyes and my screen, but I hardly notice the color difference between "Oregon coast" and the lands outside Oregon.
  • If I look for example to the USA map, I notice that the arrow, the distance legenda and the map title have different styles. Are the ones of Oregon in accord to the voy standards?

These minor stuff apart, you really did a great job ;-) --Andyrom75 (talk) 07:18, 29 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for changing the color of "Oregon coast" it would be easier to be seen. A lot of non standard color are present within the maps so I neither haven't noticed :-P but you are right.
It's good that you are testing other standard element, but take into account that this would have a huge impact because theoretically we should change all the maps in all the languages. --Andyrom75 (talk) 08:57, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In this article there's another opportunity for one of your new maps ;-) --Andyrom75 (talk) 13:14, 1 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, take the time that you need. I can imagine that "good map drawing" is a time consuming activity (that couldn't be done from anyone ;-)). Cheers, --Andyrom75 (talk) 11:07, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Gosh, also Nevada and Nebraska are having a trouble time with their maps :-) --Andyrom75 (talk) 11:37, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You could add to your future to do list also the map of Virginia. --Andyrom75 (talk) 22:10, 24 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I keep on highlighting the map list that need an improvement. I hope one day it could be useful for you :-) This is the time for Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. Cheers. --Andyrom75 (talk) 08:18, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Follow your preferred approach :-) During the last mont I was creating the draft for each American States (I'm working finally on the last one!), so I've highlighted you all the bad maps as long as I've found them :-P
I hope that I haven't annoyed you. Enjoy --Andyrom75 (talk) 06:56, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Clipper card—Compass card[edit]

Shaundd, thanks for your kind comments on talk:Bay Area public transit. I am glad you found something of value there (the rest of the article needs a lot of work) and look forward to seeing what you write about Vancouver's Compass card, so I can appropriate some of your ideas, too. I rode Vancouver public transit, perhaps 25 years ago: went to beautiful Wreck Beach, among many other great places. Peter Chastain (talk) 03:56, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In this case I would suggest you a different approach. Considering that most of the language version share the same map, any minor fix/change is good that is implemented over the same map, but when occur a region reorganization, is important to create a new map, otherwise you could provoke inconsistencies over the other language version.

That said, thanks for highlighting that change, so I can update the article. --Andyrom75 (talk) 17:14, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dynamic Maps[edit]

  • Just an FYI - I did create a map in Commons and did some tests - see Test Commons Data Map and noted a few things. Generally it is fairly simple to do... You can use mapframe or maplink to read the file; however, you may have to mess with group or show etc. to make odds n ends show up - Cheers! -- Have fun in your testing! -- Matroc (talk) 03:27, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

France region maps[edit]

Hi.

My removing redlinks without any context or explanation (i.e. redlinks that lack even a one-liner listing) is not to be understood as implying they are not legitimate articles, but rather that the redlinks add nothing of value right now and they may well be added back in if and when the article is created or some other need for them develops or is shown. As for the merge tag, Botswana is one of several (for now mostly African) countries of which I have noticed that they are excessively subdivided for the moment, containing region articles with nothing or next to nothing in them, hence the merger proposals. Hobbitschuster (talk) 00:08, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hobbitschuster, I don't agree. Listing a destination as a redlink at least acknowledges that we've thought about it and placed it in a region. And if redlinks are kept to articles that should have an article, it can help identify places we should be writing about. I'm not fussed about removing redlinks for little villages that have little or no tourist value, but in this case, Serowe doesn't fall in that category.
Regarding region articles, I don't think lack of content is the same thing as excessively subdivided. I put my rationale for the Botswana region structure on its talk page. Cheers, -Shaundd (talk) 07:16, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Misc Alberta[edit]

Hi Shaundd,

I started a discussion about some minor modifications to Alberta's districts, I was wondering about your thoughts as you were quite involved in the initial discussion; the talk page is at Talk:Alberta#Tweak the Regional Boundaries & Names. I was also wondering if you wanted to produce an updated Edmonton map? Anthony Henday Drive (Hwy 216) now encircles the entire city but the northern portion is missing from the current map.

Thanks for all your help, especially with the Calgary Districts project! -- MuzikMachine (talk) 21:39, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@User:MuzikMachine:, no worries, glad I could help. I find setting up districts is tricky and I think Calgary looks good. I left my thoughts on Alberta's regions on the Talk page and I'll try to squeeze the Edmonton map edits in. -Shaundd (talk) 09:07, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I had trouble uploading the file. I can try again today, but yes, if it’s going to be edited you will need the svg file. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 11:29, 27 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@SelfieCity: No worries. I forgot to mention on the Talk page that you can also use the default sans-serif font in Inkscape (I think it's just labelled "sans-serif" in the Font Family box). It's not the preferred font (Dejavu Sans) but it's close enough and I've seen other map makers use it before. -Shaundd (talk) 14:03, 27 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the font I'm using is sans-serif, I believe, so that works.
Unfortunately when I try to export the file it automatically converts to .png. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 14:49, 27 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I found a tutorial online, and it's working now. Unfortunately the water boundaries on the map are behaving strangely, but at least you will be able to edit the image. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 14:53, 27 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
