Hi, Traveler100. I'd like to join in welcoming you to Wikivoyage. I also want to let you know that I deleted a question you asked in the FAQ. The FAQ is not a place for people to post their own questions (though you're always welcome to post a relevant question on Wikivoyage talk:FAQ). I think you probably now have a better idea of how it is that most of the content here is the same as on Wikitravel, and I'll add that content, here and on Wikitravel, is not copyrighted but subject to copyleft guidelines which require that the editing history of every page be preserved. So no, there is no "blatant copying" from Wikitravel, which does not own anything but a website (in other words, I believe I speak accurately in saying that they own none of the content on that site except for their logo). This site does not tolerate copyright violation. For the future, please keep the Wikivoyage:Travellers' Pub in mind as a good place to ask any kind of general question you're curious about. Actually, as I'm sure you already know as an experienced Wikipedian, Traveler 100 most of the contributions on both Wikitravel and here on Wikivoyage are copyright - it's just that the copyright owners (typically the authors that made the edits) have been generous in licensing their copyrighted contributions.

Both sites are hosted in the US, which ratified the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (Berne Convention) on 1 March 1989 {it had already been a member of the less complete and practical Universal Copyright Convention (UCC) since 16 September 1955}.

Effectively, this means that all of our editors who are citizens of (or domiciled in) any sovereign state that is a member of either of these treaties (or has a bilateral treat with the US - ie most countries of the world) can claim copyright protection both in the US and all other territories that are signatories without any further formal requirement other than publication.

{Previously, under the UCC, any local formalities in signatory territories needed to be met by using a notice of copyright in the form and position specified in the UCC; ie: the symbol © accompanied by the year of first publication and the name of the copyright proprietor (example: © 2007 Singapore Alice) placed prominently so as to put everyone on notice of the copyright claim. This all changed when the Berne Convention was signed by the US and its Federal law was subsequently changed to make copyright notices optional.}

Although there are still territories such as Afghanistan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Iran, San Marino, Turkmenistan and Tuvalu that offer little or no copyright protection to either domestic or foreign authors but, as far as I am aware, we haven't had many contributions from nationals of those territories that are not also domiciled in signatory territories (and even fewer where those unprotected authors are the sole or even major contributors to Wikivoyage articles) - but for practical purposes the vast bulk of Wikivoyage's content is protected by both US federal copyright law and that of most territories foreign to the US. -- Alice^✉ 23:05, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Please be aware that uploading promotional photos, such as photos of resort restaurants of no obvious intrinsic interest as unusual landmarks and such, is prohibited under Wikimedia Commons policies. Please see here: [1]. Several of the photos you've uploaded are questionable. I see that a few are on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States, which should satisfy the notability exception, whereby hotels that are sights of interest in themselves can and indeed should be included in photos on this site, but I question the photo of the Ayana Resort's restaurant in the Jimbaran article. Was not intended as advertising, I have no connection to any tourist company (except the fact I stay a lot in hotels). The images are uploaded to Commons, with a quite different policy. Places need not be notable or sights, the images just have to be realistically useful for an educational purpose. I think images of restaurants, like the one mentioned, easily fulfil that criteria, e.g by allowing comparing (architecture etc. of) restaurants of different locations, types or times. Also promotional images are useful, at least to show how different businesses have tried to promote themselves (even when they have no other qualities). I was referring at first to Commons policy. My first link is to the Upload Wizard, where you can see the following statement:

"We can't accept works created or inspired by others. This includes material such as promotional photos." There are two exceptions, neither of which clearly address promotional photos. So it is up to interpretation whether promotional photos of restaurants, hotels, and the like are OK under this policy, and I don't know what kind of discussions there have been in Commons to set policy. So I will take your point that maybe such photos are OK for Commons, but there is a separate Wikivoyage policy that I also link to, which governs the use of promotional photos here. If you need some help to understand Map Sources you can ask me because I was the programmer. The main idea was to be independent of the tools server which maybe should be closed in future. Unfortunately, because of the migration maintenance I had not much time to be at all places. A smaller problem is the placement of dotm tags (see for instance Washington, D.C.). Do not think that was me. I have been looking at the indexing of travel topics and Diving the Cape Peninsula and False Bay was the place I started. Replacing the travel topic tag at the top with more compact and useful breadcrumbs, see Talk:Travel topics. Also made a suggestion at Wikivoyage talk:Image policy on collapsing images on the diving pages. Have definitely not made any comment on Singapore article. I noticed you rated Hiking in the Nordic countries. I also read you have been active at a hiking project at Wikipedia. I'd be glad if you could comment further on the topic.

I think the article needs comments from "outsiders" about what missing information is most crucial. As you seem to have experience of hiking but not of the countries in question, I think you could give very valuable advice.

Hi, I noticed this type of call in the Article status page you just made. I have been looking for that too, but unfortunately have not found a way to do it automatically. The way it is done on Wikipedia is that there is a project(expedition) template placed on the talk/discussion pages of any article that is related to that subject. The template will, among other things, place the page in a category. You can then do a count on that. I have an idea how we could create an article status table for a particular expedition grouping of pages, such as all those in Brazil. Is there any way to initiate an update of Special:UncategorizedPages? If not and this is a scheduled batch job, would it be possible to make it more regular? Say, update once a day?

I do not think there is such a magic word. The way enwiki does is to have users stick every article without categories in the a category of articles without categories :D Regarding the updates, the Wikimedia Operations team can initiate an update of that special page, as with all pages. I seem to recall that it is a scheduled thing, and they can probably adjust the time, but I doubt they'll be open to make it that frequent. ...not to take action on an article nominated for deletion (beyond placing the {{vfd}} template on the page at issue) until consensus is established as to what should be done with it—which, per our deletion policy, usually does not happen until the completion of a discussion period on Wikivoyage:Votes for deletion of a minimum 14 days' duration.

It looks like you nominated South (New Zealand) at VfD at UTC 10:40 on March 11th, 2013, proposing that it be redirected to South Island. Then, only two hours later (UTC 12:39), you went ahead and redirected the article. In addition, you gave no indication on the VfD discussion that the article was actually redirected as you proposed, nor did you archive the redirected article.

I was assessing it as a travel topic page but I can see that maybe it makes more sense to have a new type of page, as you have defined call a gallery, that is a supporting page of another one. I am fairly sure that any gallery page for a WV article should be on WV. Otherwise it is likely to be edited by people who have no idea of what it is for.

You have put a gallery page template on an experimental map page at Diving the Cape Peninsula and False Bay/Star Wall/Map. This is not a problem as it is an experiment. The purpose is to allow a map to be printed at higher resolution then in the article if the article is printed as part of a book. If it can be made to work, we may need another template for map pages, but no rush. It doesn't work quite as I wanted at this stage, but I hope that the book software will be modified to allow some control of the printout. Hi there! I know you spent a lot of time making the numbers on the WV:Article status stats page balance out, so perhaps you can help me out. I am trying to do something similar on pt: (here) which should in theory be a lot simpler, since we haven't yet split our status tags into city, region, district, etc. We otherwise have the same article types and the 5 basic statuses all categorized by the same types of templates we have on en:, and as you can see from my page, the numbers of articles with statuses and the number of articles by type all add up perfectly. However, for both ways of looking at it, there are 609 articles missing from the total NUMBEROFARTICLES, and I can't for the life of me figure out where they are-- there are no uncategorized pages, no uncategorized categories, and I have used every possible combination I can think of in CatScan to try to find them, to no avail. I can only think of two possibilities: 1) NUMBEROFARTICLES is including some class(es) of articles that are actually not main namespace articles, or 2) there is a self-contained category tree of articles out there which is disconnected from the main tree (Categoria:Conteúdo) and which happens to be completely free of all status and type tags but which have some other mysterious, manually-inserted categories (and I do not know a way to search for categories which do not fall under the main category). Neither hypothesis seems terribly likely, and I am completely stumped as to where 15% of our content could be hiding. Do you have any ideas or insight here? There is actually the same problem on this site. I have extracted all mainspace article, removed redirects and it does not add up to the same number as that given by NUMBEROFARTICLES. I think there are other page types being added to the total. I have not however found a method of listing all articles that NUMBEROFARTICLES uses to compare with the list of all mainspace articles. --Traveler100 (talk) 15:55, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No it should not count redirects and by default only count mainspace articles, i.e. not pages that start with special names like wikivoyage: or Categoria: however I believe this is a systems setting (not sure where it is set though). Looking at the pt site I see only 3778 mainspace articles and 372 redirects. I would recommend downloading AutoWikiBrowser even when you are not authorised to use the tool to edit you can you it to generate lists of pages. Hey, would your bot be able to add the default pagebanner ToCs? They should be added only to the destination guides (continents, countries, regions, cities, and districts), and only to articles that currently lack {{pagebanner}}. To complicate things, destinations on different breadcrumb paths should get different default images:

Hi there. I though you might be interested in this discussion. We are talking about changing the starnom template so that it goes at the top as a simple notice, and leaves the guidewhatever template at the bottom, so that starnom article still fall into their appropriate guide status category instead of only the catchall starnom category. This will imply some changes to the chart at WV:Article status stats, namely of removing starnoms from the count since they will already be included in the guide categories, and possibly displaying the starnom count somewhere else if you want. Hi there. I just thought you might be interested to see how I have adapted and expanded (on pt:)the status tracker pages you came up with. Your pages gave me the idea to try and create a one-stop "maintenance panel" with links to and an overview of every possible maintenance-related issue. You can see what I came up with here.

Since it's all in Portuguese, let me give you a quick run-down:

• Top-bar: links to New pages, Recent changes, VfD, public logs, abuse log, spam blacklist, Special:Statistics, and multi-lingual statistics
• Status table: based on the one you made, but with added bar charts showing the balance of statuses for each row
• Center left: based on your clean-up stats page, links to and numbers from the various maintenance categories
• Center-center top: links to Special list pages most relevant to maintenance
• Center-center bottom: links to tools: Special:LinkSearch, category intersection tool, CatScan, listing converter tool, image search tool, edit counter tool
• Center right: status bars for standard templates: status tags, geo implementation, banner implementation
• Bottom: Category trees

I've tried to clean up Calgary a bit. +1 403-NXX-XXXX, ten digits. There are still some converted listings where the address is in the description field and a couple of telephone numbers I had to look up using the venue's external website as the article had a missing digit or an extra digit. Hi there! I think our little edit war over the Pullman Stuttgart Fontana raises an important issue - what rates should we quote to make sure we give useful information, and compare hotels in a fair way. I have indeed just booked said Pullman for two nights, double occupation, breakfast included for EUR 60 per night. Today's cheapest advance booking price is EUR 79 for weeknights, but I keep seeing offers of around EUR 75, breakfast included, on accorhotels.com quite regularly. Then there is the weekday advance booking rate, the flex rate, the rate for fair / special event days and finally the actual rack rate displayed somewhere in the hotel which is probaby exorbitant.

I am quite sure nobody pays the rack rate at the Pullman. I also believe except for business travellers forced to attend the trade fairs, nobody pays the top rate as well. Most travellers would book in advance, come over for weekends and generally snoop for the best price rather than just book off the hook. What rate should we give them to be a useful guidance of how much staying at the Pullman should be? Do we have fixed guidelines as to what rates should be quoted, and do they make sense? The upgrade rooms have an extra small working room with desk, but in general all rooms are of reasonable size. Main thing is to ask for a room away from the train line as they start early in the morning (but the good rail connection is one of the plus points of this hotel). Minor oddity when the window is open the air conditioning switches off. In Vaihingen first choice to eat would be Neuer Ochsen, but I will add some more. Only eaten at the museums at private events so cannot comment on normal facilities. In town centre try Ochs'n Willi. If you are in the area for some time then take the train to Esslingen in the early evening for the medieval Christmas market. Thanks for the tips on the rooms, will take your advice and try to get a room in the direction of Vaihingen. Just to make sure - I am there for a day, I decided to add Stuttgart in between Munich and Frakfurt because I kept getting great rate deals from Pullman Fontana and could never fit it into my schedule, just want to try it once. So, I am looking for a quick light bite for lunch and perhaps another one for early evening, not a Michelin-starred dinner - I will probably be in bed by dinnertime to wake up early for my ICE to Frankfurt.

As concerns the room rates - ranges are hardly informative, as the Pullman can be had for both EUR 60 when I booked it in advance for a fair-free weekend, and for EUR 240 when there is a trade fair. This does not provide too much of an information to anybody and doesn't help compare hotels, because all of them will have super sales and ultra high-rate days. I believe we should give a reasonably comparable rate. I always try to find the lowest consistently achievable rate over the coming months when I "price" hotels for Wikivoyage, because it shows how much a hotel is really worth, not how much you have to pay if you REALLY need to be there on a particular day. A run-down two-star hotel in Cologne is not worth EUR 300 per day, even if that's what they will charge you during Anuga. Do we even have an official guideline for that, btw? A discrepancy of 1 appears in two places: "Has status" in the upper right under "Standard templates", and at the red dot by the grand totals at the bottom of the table, where the totals differ by one more than the number of ghost articles (when the totals are correct there is no red dot). It has to be maintained manually, but someone wrote a nifty tool that does the counting automatically, and then you just have to fill in the number at Wikivoyage:Maintenance panel/Ghost articles. Glad to help, Wales is a destination that has been a little overlooked. As for a Blue flag beaches in Wales article, difficult to say. There are articles on activities such as Beachcombing and lists on themes of location like UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. A page which is just a list is not usually views favourably here, so you have to think what added value could you bring to a traveller in such an article as opposed to just linking to a web site that lists the places? Maybe explanation of what Blue Flag means, review of the beaches and obviously links to pages about the closest town. Beaches per se are generally considered points of interest that belong in the "Do" section of articles about the nearest locality. The D-Day beaches are obviously an exception because of their tremendous historical interest. If the Blue Flag beaches are really special and it makes sense to treat them as a unit, rather than just as individual points of interest in articles about the nearest town, perhaps they also would merit a travel topic article. Have a look through some of the other travel topic articles and see what you think. If you are unsure whether the topic would be a likely target of Votes for deletion, you can always put a draft of it in your userspace and then post a link in the Travellers' pub for people to look at and give some feedback. I just noticed that Andalusia has an {{event}} template for a holiday that happens every year on Feb. 28, so the year field of the template is obviously not filled in, but this causes it to appear in Category:Articles with out of date events. Since it happens every year, obviously it wouldn't make sense that we need to go into the article and update a year field every year (especially after this template takes off into the thousands), so we need a way to set repeating events so that they don't fall in the maintenance category. that does not fix the problem it just ignores it. If you do not put a year in then no error, would be better if you could input annual in the year field. Although would to have lots of checks in the code so date checks do not go wrong. Of course not, and in fact, there are several of my own initiatives carrying an experimental tag as we speak, but the fact is that this has never been anything but experimental. We were clearly still experimenting with it at the end of March when the last developmental discussion took place and we got rid of the problematic category system. As this is a new template designed to be implemented in tens of thousands of pages, we need to have clear community support behind it before we call it good (per Wikivoyage:Mediawiki templates#New MediaWiki template proposals. But remember, I'm one of the few who has expressed support for at and worked on tweaking it to work more acceptably.

Nothing would change except that you would have more tools, which you could use, for example, to delete spam and block spammers. The rollback tool is also handy because it enables you to roll back multiple edits by the same person at once, when those edits are spam, vandalism or gross touting. I don't use the rollback tool too often, but it's helpful when someone is posting a lot of junk really quickly. The Wikivoyage:Administrators page explains what tools admins have. One idea is to add points of interest along the way as listing. If you place coordinates on them, they will display on the map. First think that comes to mind are the hut. Any places for suppliers, water etc.? Any interesting landscape points? Can add images to listing which will show on the map when you click on them. Hi Traveler100. Volubilis and Moulay Idriss have been merged. I think it makes more sense to have them as two separate destinations (even though they are close to each other) since they are really two very different attractions, that attract a complete different kind of travelers. Many people with and interest in Roman history only visit Volubilis and by putting it under Moulay Idriss it hides one of the major sights to see in Morocco too much in my opinion. the situation was that we had two stub articles to places close to each other. Simplest thing to do was merge them to make a complete article with full page template section headings. I can see however that Volubilis is one of those places that even though there is no place to sleep (technically definition of location) it deserves its own page. Iberia is a region because articles it lists are in its hierarchy, Amazonia is an Extraregion, and Levant should be. All extraregion is saying is that it is another way of collecting sub-regions or cities together that is not part of the main hierarchical structure. It's not possible to use it for reservations to visit the brewery; they just give you the paid number that was listed before (via the tourist office). Regarding the big 23,120 items list I have generated - I am still not exactly sure what you and Wrh2 meant in the Travellers' pub discussion page when you both mentioned that it has "too many false positives". Please explain exactly what type of articles you noticed in that list that were not supposed to be in it.

• Did you mean that some of the items in the list were only Engvoy redirect pages instead of actual articles with corresponding articles on Wikipedia?
• Did you mean that some of the items in the list, which do have corresponding articles on Wikipedia, already have a link on the Wikipedia page which sends their reads to the corresponding Engvoy article? (there should be around ~3,000 of those, which are only a small portion from the total 23,120 articles which need links back from Wikipedia).
• Or maybe you meant something else?

Why is it vandalism. The user created an entry to a good hotel in Romrod. This is actually a gap in articles in that area but Alsfeld makes more sense as it is larger and better known. As for your deletion Wolfschlugen, they were also valid eat and sleep destinations, in fact they were new to me and was thinking of trying them next time I am in Stuttgart as they are in a useful location. I had put a merge on the that page to Filderstadt but was giving the newly registered user the opportunity to do it himself, if not was going to do it later in the week. Please read the full thread - this user is a troll with a nearly ten year history of questionable contributions. He is active across numerous Wikimedia projects, and has had dozens and probably hundreds of sockpuppet accounts blocked across those projects. Ok so now confirmed by the user (but how did you confirm); what this says to me is that we need a way of marking on skitzophrenic users' pages that they are sock puppet so that other users will keep an extra eye on there edits and remove things that are obviously vandalism (entries dating back to 2006 on talk page of Deletion policy is not an obvious place to notice things). Confirming the identity of a troll is mostly a matter of waiting until they do something that removes any doubt as to their identity - I usually keep an eye on any user that is creating multiple mostly-empty skeletons to see if they do anything that matches this particular user's behavior. There are a few specific things that this user does that help in identification, but as the pcv thread shows he changes his behavior based on talk page discussions, so I'd rather not call them out. Yes, I should have included that one line listing into Yamba, and I actually went ahead and improved the listing. (I live in New South Wales and do care about the quality of the articles). I know you probably don't agree, but this user has proven to be quite a problem creating hamlet articles all over Australia (also recently having created an article for Queensland for a town with an official population of zero), and encouragement isn't exactly high on my priority list.
