The list

[edit | edit source]

@Ground Zero: thank you for the improvements you have made to this article. Here are some errors that you must correct:

  1. The first paragraph of an article should explain why a reader would want to visit a place. What makes it interesting?
  2. As your assignment page says: "Common error to avoid: you should add an address (street, building number, etc.) to your listing but do not repeat the city name. For example, if your listing is in Ansan, the address does not need to contain the city name." That also means you do not include the province and country name. All of the listings in Ansan are going to be in Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea, so we do not repeat that information.
  3. Please review our policy on touting. Some of what you added sounds like advertising for the hotels or restaurants. We don't Wikivoyage to sound like the hotels' or restaurants' websites.
  4. As your assignment page says: "In South Korea and China articles, we always use the 24-hour clock (09:00-18:00), not the 12-hour clock (9AM-5PM)."
  5. If a listing is open daily, it is clearer and simpler to write "Daily" instead of "M-Su".
  6. "Please show prices in this format (for Korea): ₩100 and not KRW 100, 100 won, or 100원."
  7. "Please show prices in this format (for China) ¥100 and not RMB 100, 100 yuan, or 100元."
  8. Section headers should follow the same rules of capitalization as an ordinary sentence: capitalize the first word in the title, and any proper names. Everything else should be lower case. We write "Get around", not "Get Around". See Wikivoyage:Section headers.
  9. Do not use boldfacing in section headings.
  10. Always include the country code in phone numbers (+82 for South Korea, +86 for China). Phone numbers should not include the "0" part of the area code -- see wv:phone.
  11. For days of the week, we abbreviate to the minimum number of letters – M Tu W Th F Sa Su -- see wv:days.
  12. Don't ever type ALL IN CAPITAL LETTERS, even if a business uses that style. Only acronyms should be typed in capital letters, not ordinary words or names. -- see Wikivoyage:Capitalization.
  13. Wikivoyage strives to avoid being an "advertising brochure" for any business, city, or service. Avoid using vague terms in descriptions, such as "..." -- wv:tout.
  14. "Directions" are a part of a sentence (placed in parentheses), so don't structure them like sentences: no initial capital letters except for proper names, and no period at the end.
  15. In addresses, we do not include the city (if it is the same as the page title), the state or zip code. See Wikivoyage:Listings.
  16. Parentheses or brackets are not used in numbers. If the digits are needed when calling from abroad, include them with no brackets (so +1-800-555-0199). For a local number where there is ten-digit dialing, the number should appear as +1 201-987-6543. Using the correct format allows the reader to dial directly from the article (if they have mobile service).

Please make these corrections. Thank you.

Korean divisions

  • - do: province
  • - si: city

  • - tong, - ri: village

Capitalization

[edit | edit source]

I understand that the rules for capitalization in English are weird, but you seem to have a problem with capitalization. You should review the rules that you have learned before. In a sentence, or in a section header in Wikivoyage:

  1. capitalize the first word, and
  2. any proper names (the names of people, places, businesses, institutions....)

Everything else should be lower case. See Wikivoyage:Section headers. Please make corrections to Chongzuo and other articles that you have edited.

Travel topic listing details

[edit | edit source]

Per Wikivoyage:Travel topic article template,

"If you add listings to specific venues, the full listing should go to a destination article. The listing in the travel topic article should describe the venue in the context of the topic, to help the reader to know whether they are interested. Details, such as street addresses, prices and phone numbers, should be omitted from the travel topic article. Instead link the full listing, or the section or article containing it."

I've removed the listings details from the article, ensuring that they are in the city articles. Please don't add any more.

Region articles

[edit | edit source]

This article has a serious problem with listings. Region articles should not have detailed listings for points of interest, restaurants, shops, or hotels. Wikivoyage:Region article template says:

"Individual listings should be placed at the lowest available level of local page (a district of a huge city or the city page for a small town)."
"points of interest (such as those mentioned in "See" sections) should not usually have markers in region articles but should be linked to the bottom-level article where they have full listings."

It would be helpful if editors familiar with the region would move listings to the correct articles.

China

[edit | edit source]

Thank you for adding information to this article. In some of your changes, you have made errors.

  • In Wikivoyage, we write prices in China articles like this: "¥45", not "CNY45".
  • In China articles, we use the 24-hour clock: we write "09:00-17:00". In countries that use the 12-hour clock, we write: "9AM-5PM". Don't mix the two styles by writing "9:00am-17:00pm". That is confusing. See the box at the top of Talk:China.
  • This article is about Xichang, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China We don't repeat that information in each listing. And Wikivoyage does not include postcodes in listings. You should leave that part out. (See Wikivoyage:Listings.)

Please make these corrections to your work. Thank you.

Moving maintenance tags to talk pages

[edit | edit source]

The instructions now say:

"This template can be placed on region articles that have specific listings listed that should be moved to city articles. Usually, this template is placed at the top of a section that contains listings that should be moved. In some situations, it can also be placed at the top of the article." (emphasis added)

Proposal

[edit | edit source]

Change the instruction for this template to:

"This template can be placed on region articles that have specific listings listed that should be moved to city articles. Usually, this template is placed on the article's talk page."

The wording of the template would be changed to reflect this from:

This is a region article; detailed listings go in the city articles, district articles, rural area articles or (national) park articles. This section should only be a brief overview.

To:

This is a region article; detailed listings go in the city articles, district articles, rural area articles or (national) park articles. This section article should only be a brief overview.

Rationale

[edit | edit source]

Maintenance tags like these are primarily of interest to active contributors. Movingbthe tags to the talk page ensures that they will continue to be listed in maintenance categories such as those listed on Wikivoyage:Community portal.

New or casual readers are unlikely to undertake this work, so these housekeeping tags only add clutter to the articles.

Putting the traveller first, let's move these internal matters out of the articles.

The reality is that these tags lie around in articles for years. The tags on Mountains and Lakes Country were placed in 2014. This is common for these tags. This proposal would improve the user experience of Wikivoyage while maintaining the functionality.

Other tags

[edit | edit source]

There are other maintenance tags that could similarly be moved tontalk pages, including:

Images

[edit | edit source]
  1. upload the image locally to Wikivoyage if you want to use it in an article here.
    1. save it from WP to your computer,
    2. then come back to WV, click on upload file in the left sidebar and follow the instructions.
  2. you need to add a disclaimer similar to the one in the file's summary section on Wikipedia.

Description: This is a logo owned by XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

Source: The logo is from Wikipedia.

Article: Main Page

Portion used: Full

Low resolution?: This is an SVG vector image of a registered trademark or a copyright-protected logo, seal or computer icon. This image should not be rendered any larger than is required for the purposes of identification and/or critical commentary. The default rendering of this image is of a size and resolution sufficient to maintain the quality intended by the company or organization, without being unnecessarily high resolution.

Purpose of use: The image is placed on the Main Page discussing XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, a subject of public interest. The significance of the logo is to help the reader identify the organization, and illustrate the organization's intended branding message in a way that words alone could not convey.

Replaceable?: Because it is a non-free logo, there is almost certainly no free representation. Any substitute that is not a derivative work would fail to convey the meaning intended, would tarnish or misrepresent its image, or would fail its purpose of identification or commentary.

Other information: Use of the logo in the article complies with Wikivoyage non-free content policy, logo guidelines, and fair use under United States copyright law as described above.

Time formatting

[edit | edit source]

Thanks, as always, for your very useful updates on articles. It is easiest for readers if we use one time format per article, rather than changing from one format to another to another through an article. There are two used in Wikivoyage -- a 12-hour format (e.g. 9AM-noon, 2PM-6PM), and a 24-hour format (e.g. 09:00-13:00 and 14:00-18:00), and we try to use the format that is used in the country the article is about. This is set out in our style guide, WV:tdf. I hope that helps. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for your very useful updates on articles, including the ones in Alberta articles. We try to make things easier for readers by using one time format per article, rather than changing from one format to another to another through an article. In countries that use a 12-hour format, like Canada and the U.S., the format we use is 9AM-noon, 6PM-midnight. For days of the week, we use these standard abbreviations: M Tu W Th F Sa Su. This is set out in our style guide, WV:tdf. I hope that helps. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for your very useful updates on articles. It is easiest for readers if we use one time format per article, rather than changing from one format to another to another through an article. For .... articles, Wikivoyage uses a 12-hour format (e.g. 9AM-noon, 2PM-6PM). We don't use "12PM" and "12AM" because they are ambiguous: some people use them to mean "noon" and "midnight", while other people use them to mean "midnight " and "noon". This is set out in our style guide, WV:time. I hope that helps. Keep up the great work.

Time and date formatting

[edit | edit source]

Thank you for your excellent work on xxxxx article. The Wikivoyage community has chosen time and date formats to make it easier for travellers to find information. Here are some key points from that policy (WV:Time):

  • Use one of these formats: 09:30–17:00 or 9:30AM–5PM. Do not use both 24- and 12-hour formats within one article. Choose between formats by following predominant local usage, e.g., 12-hour format in the UK, US, English Canada; 24-hour format in Europe, Quebec, most of Asia and Latin America. Check the formatting box at the top of the talk page of the country, e.g, Talk:United Kingdom.

24-hour format:

  • Use 00:00 for midnight and 12:00 for noon.

12-hour format:

  • Use upper case "AM" and "PM".
  • Use noon and midnight, not 12PM and 12AM.

Days of the week:

  • Abbreviate to the minimum number of letters – M Tu W Th F Sa Su – in lists and where space is short.
  • When combining days with time, put the days first: M–F 10AM–2PM, not 10AM–2PM M–F.

Thanks for your cooperation and for your contributions.

Connecting articles to the guide

[edit | edit source]

it is great that you are improving Wikivoyage's coverage of Nigeria by creating new articles. However, because you are not connecting them to other parts of Wikivoyage, the only way for readers to find them is by using the search function. Look at Madobi, for example. It isn't linked from other articles. If a reader is looking at the Kano State article to find places to visit, they won't find Madobi there. Here are the ways we connect articles together so that readers can navigate easily through Wikivoyage and find information: 1. Always put a link to a destination article in the article of the region to which it belongs. For Madobi, put Madobi in either the list of "Cities" or the list of "Other destinations ". 2. To include Madobi on the map of the Kano State article, you have to add the Wikidata number. Go to the Wikidata site, search on "Madobi", and at the top of the page, you will see a number that starts with the letter Q. 3. Always put this template at the bottom of the article: {{IsPartOf|}} with the name of the region after the |. This creates a line pagebanner that looks like this:

Africa > West Africa > Nigeria > North West Nigeria > Kano State
These links help the reader navigate to other articles they ma be interested in.

4. Always put this template at the bottom of the article: {{geo|lat|long}} with the latitude and longitude coordinates (which are available from Wikidata). 5. It is customary to include a link to the region (Kano State in this case) in the first paragraph of this article. Doing these things will draw more readers to your articles, and make Wikivoyage more useful for them. I have made these edits to some of your earlier new articles, but it is up to you to make them on others, and on all new articles that you create. If you have any questions, please ask. Regards,

Page banners

[edit | edit source]

The page banner you added to xxxxx does not meet Wikivoyage requirements and must be cut down to the correct size. You can crop a banner can be cropped online using CropTool without editing them in an external picture editor.

  1. Open existing source the file in Commons
  2. Select CropTool from the Tools panel on the left
  3. (The first time, you have to authorize the tool)
  4. Select Aspect ratio: 7:1, press Preview
  5. Check the preview, select Upload as new file and type the new file name according to the above instructions
  6. Press Upload
  7. After successful upload, check the new file and add it to the appropriate category "Category:Wikivoyage banners of "

Section headings

[edit | edit source]

Wikivoyage:Section headers says to capitalize the first word in the heading, and any proper names. Everything else should be lower case. For example, "Coffee and casual drinks". not "Coffee & Casual Drinks". And we do not use boldfacing in section headings. Please make these changes to Guangyuan. Thank you.

Listing templates

[edit | edit source]

Hi user:ShuaiXuesheng, regarding these edits, please do not remove fields from listing templates even if you are not using them. In Wikivoyage, we leave these fields blank so that another editoor can fill in information like url, address, hours, and price later.

When you are adding listings, always be sure to include the "| lastedit = [date]" field with the current date. This lets readers know how current the information is. We started adding dates in 2015, so anything that you see without a date is likely to be more than 11 years old.

The "lastedit" field was added to the listings templates in 2015.
