Lhuentse is the capital of Lhuentse district on the Kuri-chu River.

Lhuentse is the administrative headquarters of Khuentse district, a remote region in north-east Bhutan famous for its Buddhist sites. The district is also the ancestral home of the Wangchuck dynasty, the current ruling monarchy.

Climate

Lhuentse has a mountainous climate with large daily temperature fluctuations. At night it is usually cold, and in the afternoon it is moderately warm.

Get in

A paved but uneven road from Mongar leads to the town. It is about 70 km from Mongar, 145 km from Trashigang and 452 km from the national capital Thimphu. Nearest airport is Yongphulla Airport 130 km away.

By bus

  • Two buses depart Thimphu daily at 5:30AM. Nu1,164 for the one and a half day journey, with a one night stop in Bumthang (fare does not include accommodation).

  • Autsho. The main business centre in Lhuentse district. A number of small shops. Two hours before Lhuentse Town when coming from Mongar. Home to the only tourist standard hotel in the district - Phayul Resort. (28 June 2025)
  • Dungkhar. A small town. Three hours from Lhuentse town. Restored ancestral home of the Wangchuck dynasty, Bhutan's reigning monarchy.
  • Khoma. A small village. Home to kishuthara silk woven fabric - considered the most refined fabric in Bhutan. A number of home stays. A thirty minute drive from Lhuentse town.
  • Rinpchen Bumpa. A sacred site with a number of relics associated with Guru Rinpoche above Dungkhar. A two hour hike from the road head. Temple and simple. guesthouse.
  • Yodra Gonpa. A small, historical temple. Home to a line of revered lamas. Stunning views. Two hour drive from Lhuentse Town.
  • Takila. Home to the largest statue of Guru Rinpoche in the world (154 feet). Around a one hour drive from Lhuentse town. Built according an ancient prophesy.

Outside Lhuentse district

  • Tashiyangtse. The picturesque main town in Tashiyangtse district. A two to three hour drive.
