Tashiyangtse is a small town and administrative headquarters of Tashiyangtse district in north-Eastern Bhutan.

Tashiyangtse is considered one of the more picturesque towns in Bhutan. It is a convenient base for visiting sacred sites and for bird watching, particularly the black necked crane. Its quality wood crafts, such as traditional bowls and cups, are prized possessions in Bhutan.

At an altitude of around 1,800m, it enjoys a moderate climate.

By bus

Sangay Transport buses depart Thimphu bus station daily at 7AM. They reach Tashiyangtse the following day at 5PM (there is an overnight stop in Bumthang). Nu1,100 (excluding overnight hotel charge).

Get around

The town is very small and can be covered on foot. Taxis are available to outlying areas.

Chorten Kora, Tashiyangtse
  • Chorten Kora - built in the 18th century to suppress negative forces, the chorten is an impressive structure that is modelled on the famous Boudhanath Stupa in Kathmandu.

  • 1 Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary (also spelled Bumdelling or Bomdeling). It covers 1,520 km² at elevations between 1,500 metres and 6,000 metres. The sanctuary covers a large part Trashiyangtse District, including Bumdeling Gewog. The sanctuary contains diverse flora, fauna, and scenery including alpine lakes and the Bumdeling Valley. It is famous as a winter home for the black necked cranes that migrate from the Tibetan plateau. The sanctuary also has several cultural and religious sites.   • Gomphu Kora. A temple built around a sacred site associate with Guru Rinpoche. Consecrated water. Famous annual festival (tshechu), which falls in March or April. One hour before Trashiyangtse town when coming from Trashigang.
  • Omba Nye. A sacred site blessed by Guru Rinpoche - a self arisen OM can be seen in the rock face. Temple built into the cliff face (often called the Taktsang of the east). A two hour drive from Tashiyangtse town to Keni Village. A three hour hike to Omba Nye. Homestays in Omba Village.
  • Pemaling Nye. A sacred site blessed by Guru Rinpoche. Stunning lakes. Home to Buddhist yogis and monks. At 4,500m, it is only accessible in early Autumn and late Spring. A 3-day trek from the roadhead at Pamadung in Bumdeling. Entry granted only after the community consult the local deity and permission is given.
