Western Coal Fields
Kentucky's Western Coal Fields is bluegrass country of a whole different nature—a banjo picking nature, that is. It's also a fine part of the state for BBQ, owing to its western location.

[edit]The state tourism promotion agency calls this region "Western Coal Fields", and locals used this term for many decades. However, with the coal mining industry having greatly declined in the current century, the most common local term for this region is now Green River Valley (after the river that drains most of the region). The terms "Northern Pennyrile" and "Northwest Kentucky" also see some use.
