Are you referring to Wikivoyage:Article status? If so, check the bottom of the page. You can also browse Category:Guide articles, Category:Usable articles, etc. --Peter Talk 22:30, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think San Marino would be "OtBP," but that's always a judgment call. If others disagree, they'll just say so on the nominations page ;)
The status at the bottom of the page is often wrong/outdated, too. If you want to re-assess the status of, say, a city guide, take a look at Wikivoyage:City guide status. Anyone can change the status of an article, except to star status, which requires a nomination. Regarding My Vagabond Inn Edits[edit]

Hello,

I would like to know why my edits have been reverted. Hi Brad, I'm not sure I understand. Are you asking for autoconfirmed permissions? If so, we aren't configured to be able to do that (yet)—bureaucrats cannot assign confirmed user status here. Rollback rights[edit]

Currently admins only, mainly due to the fairly casual requirements we have for adminship (just about any long-time user who does regular janitorial work can be given the tools to make that work easier). Clarification regarding removal of the wikilink from Twin Lights Historic Site on the Wikivoyage Sandy Hook site[edit]

Thanks for steering me to the policy on links to Wikipedia. I do, however, want to make a case for restoring the link from the "Twin Lights Historic Site" mention on the Wikivoyage site to the article on that landmark in Wikipedia. The Wikipedia article has important historical background, and good photos of this significant installation. That would require a policy change. Regardless, it might be nice to bring some of the most relevant info/best photo over here. These are very technical flags with no real significance to anybody but the recent changes patrollers, no reason to notify the users imo. While every city should be listed in a region, not every city should be listed at every layer of the hierarchy (like putting every city, town, pueblo, what have you in the North America article). Chile[edit]

Hi Peter, thanks for your message. I prefer to answer here to make it easier for you ;)

I suppose we talked with the same journalist, so I tried to explain that to him. Anyway, I'm not sure of why Chile doesn't have the history from JAMGuides. I think that's probably because there was a "Chile" article at the Incubator, so when Spanish Wikivoyage was approved as official, all the content from the Incubator was moved to the official site. When the JAMGuides articles were imported, probably there was a duplicate in the "Chile" case so it wasn't imported; "Chicago" wasn't created on the Incubator so the JAMGuides article was imported.

Also, I think most of the articles from JAMGuides that only included the section's headers were deleted so probably that's why the number of Chilean articles decreased so much. --B1mbo (talk) 23:31, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Peter, I have been flicking through the edit histories in the Asia article trying to work out if there is a pattern to the recent editing there and if there is an IP or user that might need some 'assistance' with MoS and guidelines. Have you seen a pattern? I did not have much time to go through it last night and only did a quick read through and tidy up. I have returned to find that article seems to have developed magnetic qualities of some kind. Clearly it will need some ongoing attention. The Destinations seem to be particularly troublesome, and there is some enthusiasm to promote Indonesian and Indian destinations with some zeal. Which user? I actually haven't been too on top of the continent articles. Since we can't coordinate patrolling very well (Bugzilla:43977), I've been focusing on monitoring less watched pages. Asia needs additional attention from an experienced hand though—the content of the various sections is underdeveloped, which looks bad on an article linked from the main page! --Peter Talk 05:20, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That Asia article seems to be getting a bit of a slamming about by some keen editing. I am feeling a bit clumsy here at the moment as I have no patrol/patrolled markers on the Recent Changes, my own Watchlist or the (diff) pages and whilst that was of no particular concern when things were a bit quieter it now the heat is now back on and this situation leaves me potentially re-patrolling an article unnecessarily, or at least skewing my priorities in Patrolling activity through being blind. Also I cannot mark an article so have resorted to adding something like "quick overview of post migration edits" to the edit notes. This is a bit like patrolling without a flashlight. Quick question: Is there an orphan template (see enwiki's template (here) on wikivoyage?) If so, what do you think about a bot running through all orphaned pages and adding a template? I have reverted you because I believe that that was an improper use of the Capt. Obvious policy. I think it's faulty to assume that everybody in the whole wide world knows what a burger, a hot dog or ice cream are. Furthermore, Capt. Obvious seems to be more about health and safety tips rather than food. Perhaps you can explain why Capt. Here is an edit from 2005 that identifies the Wikitravel user:LA2 to be the same as user:LA2 on Wikipedia. Is that not enough? Sorry about that. As you may have guessed, the reason was lack of a pointer towards that evidence. We had a ton of requests without any information given to confirm identities, and I figured the quickest way to make the problem clear was to just remove the entries, and keep the ones that were done correctly as examples of how it should be done. I wanted to apologize again. By way of explanation: I'm the kind of person who's easily rattled by profound, rapid change. I do have uncertainties about what direction Wikivoyage may take in the future—I suspect we all do—but in rereading my comments, they were ridiculously overblown, they represented an extremely selective memory of recent discussions, and they were easily interpretable as a personal attack (though, again, they were not intended as such).

None of that is any excuse, though. As I said, I have immense respect for you, and I'm grateful for the help you've given me, i.e. in perusing the Buffalo district articles. Again, I'm sorry.

Heh, no, I got the blank maps from File:World98.svg and File:Jewish population in the USA in 2000.svg. Since they are in SVG format, they're pretty easy to edit quickly using Inkscape. Commons cat temp[edit]

We've actually displayed this in a different way, and I think our links (courtesy of one of our bots) are now pretty comprehensive and up-to-date. Yeah, that's why I like it that way. The disadvantage is that it's not very eye-catching. I've been thinking of ways to improve the sidebar, and I think icons could help a lot (WP and Commons icons would be obvious additions). No need to apologise - no problems - my roaming recent changes for welcomes I came across a user name that was ridiculously long, and for some reason I cannot get back to the recent changes of 2 days ago to get the example... it would have been about 08:00 UTC on 26th January - and the name was like 4 or 5 names joined together... Sorry about not getting back, I am not sure that developing an idea for wikivoyage by comparing others would necessarily be the best way to create one - the decidedly different logics in some aspects of the wikivoyage entering into editing process clearly needs some careful nurturing into an 'easy' entrance for prospective editors. That is not to say that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Usernames is not a very useful measuring stick in principle.

I suspect that anything that ties into inter-wiki compatability is as important as anything. For some reason my trying to access my search page in meta has fouled up, but if meta-wiki has policy I suspect that should be a default to consider. The bad ones as identified in wp.en I think need to be one worth considering here, but with carefull observation so far there has been a very low level of stupid names that need to be blocked on site during my recent changes experience. Removing Invalid Requests[edit]

Greetings! I made a request to merge accounts which you removed. I think the problem was that I assumed you just wanted my username on WT and my username on WV. I didn't realize you wanted the pre-munged version here already. I just figured this out and I submitted a new request.

Anyway, if you are going to remove what appear to be good faith requests, I think you should really let the people who made those requests know! In my case, I was requesting two identical usernames be merged so I think it should have clear, to someone like you who understands this process, that I must have been confused.

Hi Mako, you still actually need to provide confirmation that you are the same person—please log on to WT and make some sort of gesture to demonstrate this, then I can confirm your identity. I'm sorry about the lack of a notice. We were just slammed with work post-launch when the banners went up on all Wikimedia sites. The large quantity of requests that either didn't make sense or were just unfulfillable were overwhelming that page, obscuring its purpose. Hi Peter. I occasionally patrol the RC in the down-time when both Americans and Europeans are sleeping (and Australians are awake). I find it would be much easier if I were to use the one-click rollback button, as described at w:Wikipedia:Rollback. I haven't seen other users using it though, so it it even enabled here? You're probably not seeing it used much because it isn't actually that useful, aside from quickly reverting vandalism across multiple articles. Failed admin request[edit]

Is there any provision for closing a admin nomination early when it's clear that the request will not pass? So far Curtaintoad's nomination has 9 opposes, and it would be less humiliating than having it close with 18 opposes. Image Question[edit]

I am currently working up an outline for the Daniel Boone National forest in Kentucky. I have decided to model it after the Kentucky page and break the forest down into ranger districts. I have found an image on the Forest Service website that shows the ranger districts and would like to use it. After reading through the image and copyright policies, I am not sure if I can use it or how to go about securing permission. CSS For New Main Page[edit]

Hi! Thanks very much for all your help so far with the Main Page proposal. I was just wondering if you could try out this CSS code for me. Hey Peter. I just saw your comment on the Pub calling for help. Did you want to go ahead and create a properly formatted IdeaLab proposal? Although I'm not sure whether it is the right place to apply, considering we have no cost estimations nor any idea of who/what to contact to implement the features. But there's no harm in trying, and from the looks of the list of proposals, the response has been lukewarm.

If we wanted to apply with the two, possibly three, proposals, the place is here. I think it's worth mentioning that the ideas are not set in stone, but there is general support among the Wikivoyage community, linking back to our local discussions. We can discuss specifics later if the IdeaLab team is interested. I'm only concerned about due dates, as our application needs to be in within a week.

Quick question[edit]

I have a question about administration, and in particular about patrolling, whose answer I can't find in the relevant article. I figure it's better to ask it somewhere where it's likely to be read and answered fairly quickly, as opposed to Wikivoyage talk:Recent changes patrol.

The article says to mark useful edits as patrolled, but on the subject of problem edits it only says to edit out vandalism, spam, etc., and to make any useful information conform to the MOS. My question is: once problem edits have been corrected, do we then go back and mark the original edit as patrolled, or do we leave it as is?

I usually mark them as patrolled right before correcting them. So, looking at a diff page, you can hit the "mark as patrolled" link, and then edit the page. I like it, but I think I like this one more. This was something I figured we would have up and running weeks ago. I wouldn't bother trying to whip up more interest, since there seems to be plenty of support for the idea (despite uncertainty about the name), but rather just go ahead and move it into the project namespace, and start advertising it as publicly as possible. I'll happily add a link in the sitenotice.
I caught the discussion about discussions that die and never go anywhere, and will respond to that too. I think the problem isn't so much with the discussion process, but that enthusiasm dies somewhere along the way, or wasn't there to start with! Prince George's County[edit]

Actually, the principle from Wikivoyage:Avoid_long_lists is independent of whether the articles exist. "Long lists and large groups of items can be difficult to grasp." If these articles *were* created, I think we could subdivide the county (possibly north/south of Rte. 50, or inside/outside Beltway). Since they haven't been created (I put some of those links there in 2007), I would argue that having them on the list isn't useful to the traveler. That's not right—take a look at Wikivoyage:Geographical hierarchy#Dividing geographical units: This doesn't need to be applied stringently to the lowest level of the hierarchy; if a region has more than nine cities in it, and there's no helpful way to divide it into subregions then don't split it. Hi Peter, lately i spent some time in Khasab and it is really pity to see how this article was killed by the migration of the pictures. I tried to completely makeover both the Musandam and Khasab article. I'm lacking a good map. The OSM material is not helpful and even google maps is rather poor. Yes, it looks like OSM's coverage of the town is very incomplete. I don't see what is wrong with Google Maps' coverage, although it doesn't matter too much, since we can't use their data. Nothing on Commons and no CIA maps either. I tried to check available PD satellite images using Nasa World Wind, but I'm having trouble getting the image layers to download for some reason. Maybe you would like to try using that program? The layers we can trace from are listed at Wikivoyage:How to draw a map#Acquire a base image. Hi Peter, thank you for your reply. I searched the above section, too. Sadly the NASA maps are not so helpful as well. It seems that only bing [8] from Microsoft has a real good map of the region. I read here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bing_Maps that Bing maps uses OSM but i fear that this still doesn't bring it in line with our copyleft policy? The best I think you can do would be to use the OSM map as a starting point, and then draw free-hand whatever streets you think are essential to include, without directly copying them from another source. West Wales- a definition[edit]

Peter - your approach would work better except that definitions of West Wales often (but certainly not always) include Ceredigion which is here included within Mid Wales. The differentiation of Wales into regions has always drawn different reactions. My own patch which is the Brecon Beacons national park is described by people living here as being variously (in parts at least) in South Wales, Mid Wales and West Wales and straddling the various borders - and the lines they would draw on the map of Wales would each be different! Well... my opinion hasn't really changed (and I think Cacahuate had the same), and wait really is a nicer way of saying oppose. I think Satsuro is clearly an asset to Wikivoyage, I want him working here, and imagine he could make a fine admin. But I'd really like to see a record of patrolling, cleaning up per the Wikivoyage:Manual of style, and participation in policy discussions, vfds, etc. before supporting an admin nomination. I think the nomination was and still is premature, and nominations of potentially good candidates concern me because a slushed nomination could turn them off to further work here. I read the "wait" comment as "let's leave this nomination open for a bit and see what happens", and I think others may have as well, so if you could just clarify that it's really an oppose vote (and still is) then that would be helpful. Please note that I have deliberately not withdrawn my application in the same spirit that I self nominated - I wanted to see how things would be working in the processes in place - quite a lot came out there that doesnt normally get aired at nominations - that in itself seemed important at the time. As to a failed nomination, I think that is academic - the procedures have been tidied up, and I am still editing here. I may have misinterprested some of the comments at the nomination, but all in all I really think it as a succesful nomination - in the way that I interpret the outcome. If, and if some editor takes it upon themselves to close the nomination as a failed one, then I suspect that is a misreading of the issues aired and the actual conversations that ensued at the nomination. And a careful reading imho suggests that the voting and the ebb and flow of the comments suggest that it is in fact a successful nomination. Whether I eventually become an admin here (or not) is irrelevent when it all washes up - there is a vast amount of content that needs fixing up, tools or no tools. I suspect in the end voting is as much as it is at wp en - it can take a very very careful read as to whether some editors change their mind over time, and their change of mind is not easy to tally when they discuss further. sats (talk) 04:18, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To sats, administrator nominations are not done by voting—virtually everything is determined on Wikivoyage via Wikivoyage:Consensus. Even how we define consensus is a little idiosyncratic, but that article does a decent enough job of explaining, hopefully. I had thought about creating a sign-up sheet like the one for the regions map expedition, but was very tired after creating the expedition page and the progress tables, and just wanted to get going. On the other hand, we don't seem to be running into each other too much (other than Vienna) and like you said, banners don't take as long as maps. Extension:Widgets proposal[edit]

Hi Peter,

Thanks for starting the small poll, responses seem positive, do you plan to send the request soon? As I suggest at the Pub, the request could be simplified by allowing Gadget edition rights directly to admins. JamesA seems to agree on that. The Gadget namespace only needs to be edited when installing a new gadget, which should be extremely rare.

Widget is known for being unsecure if edited in a wrong way (arbitrary client-side HTML injection), so Mediawiki might refuse. It might reassure them if we promise to not use the notoriously insecure Iframe widget, and only use VoyageMap instead.

Map problem[edit]

At Talk:Northern_Lights#Article_status you wrote "Wikivoyagifying the maps would be nice, and that's something I can certainly help with."

The map at Shanghai#Districts is one I stole from WP; the URL is on the talk page somewhere. It sort of works, but it is far too large and my attempts to adjust the size with obvious things like just adding a "400px" fail miserably. I know almost nothing about graphics in general or maps in particular and have no idea how to fix this. On the other hand, I have written text and added some articles to match that map's division of the city (reasons on talk page) and really do not want to revert to another map.
