Welcome

Hello, Curtaintoad! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here. sats (talk) 08:23, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for the welcome. CURTAINTOAD! TALK! 08:48, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Question: I am looking for userboxes please; like Wikipedia, does Wikivoyage have userboxes? CURTAINTOAD! TALK! 09:30, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Best thing is to check user pages of some of the admins - I will think you will find things there are the best examples sats (talk) 12:59, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the tip CURTAINTOAD! TALK! 03:56, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also, another question: I want to welcome new users please; how do I do that? :) CURTAINTOAD! TALK! 07:35, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that imho (a) welcoming entails a sufficient knowledge of the workings of other wiki's (ie wp en or commons or others) so that you look carefully at edits/contributions on recent changes when you do so - if someone is simply signing up there is a good chance it is good faith, any doubt about edits - better to alert admins or others as to irregular behaviour or edits (b) it is possible to mimic others on a whole range of things - just look at (ie inside) my welcomes and you can see that curly brackets enclosed subst:welcome and your signature is sufficient (c) about one in 200 will react badly - ignore it and dont respond unless it needs cleaning up by an admin (d) due to the activity of some cross wiki users - some very odd occurrences are worth looking at closely and not over-reacting towards... (d) IPS - there is a general usefulness of providing good edit Ip's with a welcome - they should be encouraged to get a user name (e) when all else fails look at the contribs/edit history closely to see whether it is a valid contribution. end of lecture. sats (talk) 08:06, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose what I get very self concious about is 'dumb and blind' welcoming can lead into problems - I suspect that I have done a few - apparently ok eds who get blocked almost straight away as they are socks/cross wiki-vandals/etc - its the risk... sats (talk) 08:19, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. CURTAINTOAD! TALK! 08:41, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New Sleep edit under Sulthan bathery

I have added the property address and contact numbers of LakeRose under the sleep category in Sulthan Bathery in Malabar, Kerala, India. But after your edit it is not appearing may I know why?

I'm not sure... :/ is it urgent or important? Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 09:40, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Swept in from the pub - okay thanks. Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 06:19, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I need help getting more information on my user page

Hello. Hey I want lots more user information on my user page, but I just can't think about it. How do I do that? Best Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 06:49, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Curtaintoad. Please see Wikivoyage:User page help and Wikivoyage:How to describe yourself. JamesA >talk 07:11, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much ;) Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 08:07, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you; I already saw the message. :) Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 05:52, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The reason you're seeing this message again is because it's been "swept in" from the Travellers' Pub. Our policy is to keep the Travellers' Pub from becoming too long, and we do that by moving old discussions to pages where they fit better - in this case, your talk page.

Ok thank you. Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 04:52, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Red-linked images

Hi, Curtaintoad. I see you're deleting red-linked images. Have you looked for replacements in Commons? If there are any, it would be way, _way_ preferable to insert those than to just delete all the red links. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:06, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Yeah, thank you for the message; I am only new to Wikivoyage (created account and have been active since 22 January 2013 - which is almost a month to me). I will look forward to-help-to improve the Wikivoyage wiki. However, those edits I did of removing-red linked images, do I have to undo all of those edits and fix it? Once again, thank you for the message -- I look forward to your reply. Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 09:21, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, you don't have to undo all of them, but if you can find suitable (not necessarily identical) replacement photos in [1], that would be fantastic! Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:35, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the note again; and please be my friend! Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 09:52, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Rename

Hi, Curtaintoad. Renaming you here on Wikivoyage would not affect your global Wikimedia SUL account, so the connection between the two would be severed. For obvious reasons, you may find that to be desirable, but we would prefer not to do that. LtPowers (talk) 01:08, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Also, there are users named Space on other wikis: sulutil:Space. I don't know if bureaucrats generally would honor this request because of this, having never been one myself. --Rschen7754 01:13, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the wait and the font ( i was busy ) . Thanks for the message ( i was just wondering if i could use that user name ) . Because i am blocked on the English Wikipedia, am i allowed to edit here on the English Wikivoyage? By the way, If my user name was Space, my signature would like this =P :
Space
I again look forward to your reply. Hope this makes sense... :) Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 10:46, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Your block on Wikipedia does not affect your ability to edit here, but we are reluctant to change your username here because it would break your single-user login account. LtPowers (talk) 14:48, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That is correct. However, if you continue the same behavior that got you blocked on the English Wikipedia (including but not limited to repeated requests for user rights, treating Wikipedia like a social networking site like Facebook, etc.) then it is possible for you to be blocked on the English Wikivoyage, just like any other Wikimedia site. --Rschen7754 21:48, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I'll try my best. Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 23:14, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Protect

Hello. You may know this, but i notice that the main page has been protected so that auto confirmed users can edit it. Maybe an administrator here on this English wikivoyage may want to change the protection to a full protection just in case (and because) a(n) auto confirmed editor may vandalize the main page - high risk to prevent vandalism from it. So could you please change the protection to a full protection just in case any vandalism happens? Thank you, and i will look forward to your reply on this talk page. Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 09:27, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Some of our best edits to the mainpage have been by auto confirmed users. If you notice any vandalism, you can let people know at Wikivoyage:Vandalism_in_progress and it will be fixed. --Inas (talk) 22:13, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you , i will try remember that . Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 02:11, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Is there a members list so that i can join this expedition? thanks, Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 02:03, 23 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is no members list for this expedition. Feel free to contribute your ideas anyway. --Inas (talk) 22:15, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you , however - do all expeditions don't have a member list ? Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 02:11, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, some expeditions have a member list. What is it you would like to read about an airport before catching a plane? --Inas (talk) 03:01, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you :) also :
* Can you please tell me what expeditions have member lists ? and;
* Are you telling me that i am about to catch a plane at an airport , or are you telling me if i was doing that on a plane . - ?
;) hope this makes sense Curtaintoad (curtain or toad) 07:35, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
See Wikivoyage:Expeditions for the answer to your first question. And the second one, what information would you like to see about airports on Wikivoyage. That's what you can contribute right now. --Inas (talk) 07:39, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Closing" discussions

Just FYI, you don't get to unilaterally "close" discussions on this site, including on your user talk page. The way to end a discussion is to stop engaging in it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:28, 4 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes Done fixed Curtaintoad curtain or toad 05:25, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest that if you feel a particular discussion on your user talk page is no longer useful, then you should archive that discussion per the advice at Wikivoyage:Using talk pages#Etiquette. Let me know if you need help with that task. LtPowers (talk) 14:25, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks though Curtaintoad curtain or toad 09:01, 10 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I would like help please. —CURTAINTOAD!06:23, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Create a new page for the archive -- something like User talk:Curtaintoad/Archive 01.
  2. Edit this page and copy the discussions you wish to archive.
  3. Paste the discussions into the new archive page.
  4. Delete the discussions from this page.
  5. At the top of this page, provide a link to your archive; you can use Template:Archive for that.

Hi, Curtaintoad. I just want to mention that your janitorial work and welcoming of new users hasn't gone unnoticed, and is appreciated.

All the best,

The copyediting is a step in the right direction. --Rschen7754 06:58, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the reply. As you may have noticed I have done, I made around ~ 5, 10 edits with welcomes/talkpages, and around ~ 55, 60 edits with other pages yesterday (I should keep it up in the future), making a total of around 65 edits -- my current goal(s) is to clean up and fix typos, add/remove full stops and spaces, etc. Maybe in a month/year or two I might nominate myself for adminship on the Administrator nominations. Also for now I should keep most of my edits to pages that are not talk pages/discussions/templates, so that I can keep doing my goal for helping improve Wikivoyage. Thanks, it was appreciated. Curtaintoad curtain or toad 07:38, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I noticed that you've done lots of formatting edits. They are helpful. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:44, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great, I'm going up now. --Curtaintoad curtain or toad 08:17, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed that too, and I join with all the others in saying congratulations. You must have been spending some time watching and learning how things are done around here, and that's exactly the way to "go up". I noticed you took an interest in the administrator nominations. There's a lot left for you to learn, but if you keep up what you're doing, and keep learning new things, maybe you can make a good admin someday. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 09:05, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Looks good. —CURTAINTOAD!00:45, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Welcomes

Hey, thanks for welcoming new users! Just so you know, we usually wait to officially welcome new users until we've seen whether they're here to help out or just to make trouble. When a user's only edits are vandalism, we don't welcome them because we don't want them here. LtPowers (talk) 00:17, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message. To be honest, I did see vandalism in the recent changes [3] on an article a few minutes ago. But I didn't know that the User:CommunistCanuck would make any vandalism to our travel guide. Thanks. Curtaintoad (user · talk · contribs) 00:24, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, there's no way to know ahead of time. That's why we usually wait until they've made a few edits, and we've had a chance to examine the edits to make sure they're good, or at least well-intentioned. LtPowers (talk) 00:36, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I will try to remember that next time. Thanks again. Curtaintoad (user · talk · contribs) 00:42, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am also very cross with something. Please reply and I will tell you. I can't do it now thanks; I'm of to do other things. Curtaintoad (user · talk · contribs) 07:25, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Usually usernames that are a random combination of characters (such as R23refr454tt) are only here to spam our wiki, though we have to wait until they start spamming before we block them. --Rschen7754 07:41, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Stubs and red links

Hi, Curtaintoad. As you know, I love all the menial cleanup tasks you've been doing - adding full stops, deleting extra spaces, and the like. There are two things that are concerning me just a little, though. I've been seeing a bunch of one-line stubs from you. I hope you plan to go back and put some meat in those articles, because stubs are really useless to travellers. Also, I think you're a little link-happy lately. I occasionally put red links into articles intentionally, if I know that there will eventually be articles about them (and often, when I go ahead and start an article right after inserting the link, such as in the case of the Novaya Zemlya link I recently put into the Belushya Guba article and the Sheffield (Massachusetts) link I put in the Berkshire Hills article a few weeks ago). But as in the case of one-line stubs, red links are really not useful to travellers, and should generally not be inserted unless either (a) you know there will be articles about the linked places eventually, or better (b) you plan on starting an article about the red-linked destination very soon (and not a stub). The idea that a place "may be notable" is not the attitude I take, at any rate; if I don't know that a link should be there, I generally won't insert it. For whatever it's worth. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:22, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the note; I will try to add information/clean up articles in the future. Curtaintoad (user · talk · contribs) 02:28, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Terrific. And thanks again for all the help. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:30, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New New Main Page

Hi - thanks for the message on my talk page. I was just wondering what sort of things you are hoping to do with your new page? --Nick (talk) 18:43, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Nicholasjf21; it's still a bit complicated for me, but I will try to say it for real. On your computer/etc, you may or may not have this, but on my COM I do - on the current main page, you may notice (I notice) that there is (currently) some white space on the right side of it; on my sandbox I am trying to cover more main page space (trying to remove white space). Also, in the future you/myself might like to keep creating new main pages until you/myself get the "exact perfect page". I am also trying to make the new main page in my sandbox look like the image on the right in the link below. Can you please also tell me what the image/file name is with the ocean and sky "in" the image on right in the link below? Thanks, hope this is better sense. Curtaintoad (user · talk · contribs) 00:16, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the image from this page - to look at it, here's a link: [4]. Curtaintoad (user · talk · contribs) 08:15, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - the image you want is here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sea_and_sky.jpg --Nick (talk) 12:18, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Curtaintoad. The New Main Page was the result of months of discussions, community consultation and technological development by coding experts. While it's great you're having a go, it is a very difficult process to use code to modify the design. Also, the white space is intended. Many users thought that if the banners scaled all the way to the edges of your screen, then it would take up too much space and you would have to scroll down to see the content. Therefore, we capped the width of the images so that sometimes they will not fit the page. JamesA >talk 12:23, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, JamesA is right. I didn't want to discourage you at all when I posted above, but it was a very long process to get the main page to its current state and took an awful lot of complicated coding to get it there. It is not yet perfect, I'm sure, but if you wanted to change it, you might be better posting within the current discussion, rather than setting out to create a brand new page by yourself, though it's great that you're having a go. --Nick (talk) 12:31, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Nicholasjf21 and JamesA for your comments. Curtaintoad (user · talk · contribs) 00:40, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes Done I have sent a message on the talk of MP. Curtaintoad (talk, contribs) 06:25, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

County articles

Hi there. Please don't go around creating county articles or any other type of small political divisions. For most places we have determined that counties are not useful subdivisions for the traveller and will just sit around mostly blank forever. We did a massive cull of county articles a few years ago and there are only a few states which still have them, mostly small states in the northeast. Yes, I could have redirected those if I had taken the time to look up each county and figure out where they go, but please don't spend your time making this kind of redirect either. In most states not even the locals know where all the counties are outside of their own, so these are of very low value to the traveller. Texugo (talk) 11:30, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Texugo for this message; also next time, before nominating the article(s) for deleting, can you please let me know? I also should've used this for adding more information before creating the real article. Curtaintoad (user · talk · contribs) 11:37, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

creation of articles

May I ask which template you are referencing to create articles. I would like to correct it as it appears to be missing the isPartOf tag.--Traveler100 (talk) 10:37, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What article(s) is it/are they? Which article(s) appears to have a missing isPartOf template? Curtaintoad (user · talk · contribs) 08:32, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Few examples - Dingle, Castleisland, Listowel, Leavenworth (Indiana). Just wondering how they are being created without the isPartOf tag (even without the parameter). I though I had corrected the templates that are referenced for creating articles, but maybe I missed on. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:56, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
But I don't know what link comes before a page with the IsPartOf tag - example (Castleisland):
Europe > Britain and Ireland > Ireland > Southwest Ireland > County Kerry > Castleisland
What article comes before Castleisland: County Kerry ({{isPartOf|County Kerry}}, that's what I should do to it); what article comes before County Kerry: Southwest Ireland; etc. But shortly after I just create an article I don't know what article comes before the one I create. Anyway, I'll work on that. Curtaintoad (user · talk · contribs) 09:43, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you don't know, you should find out before creating the new article -- and even if you don't, you should just leave the IsPartOf template in the article, without a parameter. =) Don't forget that any new articles should always be linked from their parent region. LtPowers (talk) 15:45, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As LtPowers states, if unsure just leave the tag without a parameter. There is a category of articles with IsPartOf tags without parameters which is easier to monitor than looking though new and recent edited pages. --Traveler100 (talk) 17:35, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I will try to work on that. Curtaintoad (user · talk · contribs) 23:22, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
