Tehri



Tehri is in the Garhwal district of Uttarakhand state.

Tehri district was changed drastically in the early 2000s by the construction of Tehri Dam, one of the largest dams in the world. Multiple settlements including the old town of Tehri were submerged, leading to the creation of New Tehri. Several high-profile activists, local community organisations, and environmental groups opposed the construction of Tehri Dam, which was a major political issue around the time of the dam's construction.

New Tehri can be reached by regular buses or share taxi from Dehradun, Haridwar, or Rishikesh. New Tehri can also be reached from Mussoorie, which may require a change at Chamba.

The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant (Dehradun) Airport (DED IATA) about 93km from New Tehri.

By train[edit]

The nearest railway station is Rishikesh about 76km from New Tehri.

New Tehri is connected with the important cities of Uttarakhand like Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun etc.

There are several new, midrange hotels on the main road that passes through New Tehri, and around the bus station. The majestic gurudwara, which has a commanding view of the city, has a couple of simple rooms that may be available in exchange for a small donation.
