St. Johann im Pongau is the main city of the Pongau Region. It is in the Salzach Valley of the Eastern Alps is in the federal state of Salzburg. The city is largely dependent on tourism: Alpine skiing in winter and hiking in the summer months.

  • Liechtensteinklamm (Liechtenstein gorge) (south of the city). Mid-Jun to end of Sep: 09:00-18:00; Oct: 09:00-16:00. One of the longest, deepest and most impressive gorges in the Alps. This gorge is about 4 km (2.5 mi) long and can be explored via walkways that were built by Prince Johann II of Liechtenstein in 1875. Adult €10, youth 6-18 €6.50.
