Sławków is a small historic town in Silesian Voivodeship, southern Poland, in the eastern part of the Zagłębie Dąbrowskie region. It lies on national road 94, between Dąbrowa Górnicza, Olkusz and Katowice, near the Biała Przemsza river.
Sławków has a medieval street layout, a compact market square, the wooden Austeria inn, remains of a castle of the bishops of Kraków, historic religious buildings, and walking areas in the Biała Przemsza valley. It is a good half-day or one-day trip from Katowice, Sosnowiec, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Będzin or Olkusz.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Sławków is one of the older urban centres in this part of southern Poland. Its development was connected with the medieval trade route between Kraków and Wrocław, mining of lead and silver ores, and its long association with the bishops of Kraków. The town still has a small-town character, with most of the main sights close to the market square.
Allow 2–4 hours for the market square, Austeria, parish church, castle ruins and the Biała Przemsza valley park. A longer visit makes sense if you want to walk along the river, cycle through the surrounding forests, or visit the owl education centre.
Get in
[edit | edit source]By train
[edit | edit source]
Sławków railway station is on Kolejowa Street, about 1.5 km west of the market square. Regional trains connect the town with Katowice, Sosnowiec, Bukowno, Wolbrom, Sędziszów, Kozłów and Kielce. Check current departures before travelling, as intervals outside peak hours can be long.
Useful timetables:
- Sławków railway station – departures
- Katowice – Sławków
- Sławków – Katowice
- Sławków – Sosnowiec Główny
From the station to the market square, walk east along Kolejowa Street and then through the town centre.
By bus
[edit | edit source]Local and metropolitan public transport is organised by Transport GZM. The most useful stops for visitors are:
- Sławków Rynek – market square, Austeria, town hall, church and the castle ruins;
- Sławków Dworzec PKP – railway station;
- Sławków ZWM – buses towards Dąbrowa Górnicza;
- Sławków Wrocławska – stop near the road towards DK94;
- Niwa Schronisko – useful for the youth hostel.
Buses connect Sławków with Dąbrowa Górnicza, Strzemieszyce, Będzin and local districts. Always check the current timetable for the exact stop, as service frequency varies.
By car
[edit | edit source]Sławków lies near national road 94, between Dąbrowa Górnicza and Olkusz. From Katowice and Sosnowiec, the easiest approach is via DK94. From Kraków, drive via Olkusz and Bolesław.
Parking is available around the market square and nearby streets, but it may fill up during events. For walks in the Biała Przemsza valley, parking closer to Młyńska Street and the valley park is more convenient.
By bicycle
[edit | edit source]Sławków is a good destination for a cycling trip from Dąbrowa Górnicza, Sosnowiec, Bukowno or Olkusz. Routes in the area pass through forests, the Biała Przemsza valley and former industrial landscapes. Check the surface before riding, as some local sections are unpaved or forest tracks.
Get around
[edit | edit source]The historic centre is small and best explored on foot. The market square, Austeria, town hall, parish church, cultural centre, town park, remains of fortifications and the castle ruins are all close to one another.
For more distant places, such as Niwa, Sowiarnia, the youth hostel, parts of the Biała Przemsza valley and the outskirts, use a bicycle, car or local GZM buses.
