Port Allen (Louisiana)



Port Allen is a town in the River Parishes region of Louisiana that sits directly across the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge and is the seat of West Baton Rouge Parish. It takes on a rather gritty and highly industrial character but has a few attractions.

If driving from Baton Rouge, you can take Exit 153 for LA 1 North once across the Horace Wilkinson I-10 bridge and it will put you there.

  • 1 West Baton Rouge Museum, 845 N Jefferson Ave, +1 225 336-2422. Tu-Sa 10AM-4:30PM, Su 2PM-5PM. Has some interesting displays about a sugar plantation and creole cottage, among other things. $4 adults, $2 students/seniors.

  • 1 Water Heritage Trail (Port Allen Landing), 100 S River Rd #198, +1 225 931-7930. Promenade along the Mississippi River that is great for watching barge traffic or looking at the Baton Rouge skyline. It used to be the old ferry landing between the two cities and likewise where US 190 crossed.
