Oroquieta



Oroquieta is the capital of the province of Misamis Occidental, in Northern Mindanao.

Oroquieta originated as the settlement of Layawan, named after a river passing south of it, and gained its present name when it was renamed after a village in Navarre, Spain. It became the provincial capital of Misamis Occidental in 1930, and became a city in 1970. Despite its city designation, Oroquieta retains a typical Philippine small town feel, and has a population of over 70,000.
