New Amsterdam is one of Guyana's largest towns on the eastern end of the Coastal Plain. It had a population of 17,329 in 2012.

Lying along the Berbice River and close to the Surinamese border, New Amsterdam is the capital of the East Berbice-Corentyne region.

The nearest passenger airport is Cheddit Jagan International Airport in Georgetown. New Amsterdam is a two-hour drive from Georgetown. The coastal drive which includes crossing the Berbice Bridge allows you to take in the beautiful countryside.
