Nevados de Chillan

Nevados de Chillan is a ski resort in the Andes mountains of the central Chilean state of Nuble. Nevados de Chillan is also the name for the cluster of three volcanoes where the ski resort is located.

Understand

[edit]
Nevados de Chillán ski resort

The resort was previously known as Termas de Chillan. New owners took over in 2008 and changed the name and upgraded the ski facilities. The thermal spas that were the focus of the previous owners are still open so you can end your ski day with a long soak in volcanically heated hot mineral baths.

The three peaks of Nevado de Chillan are active volcanoes. Cerro Blanco is the volcano to the northwest and rises to a height of 3,212 meters. Volcan Viejo lies to the southeast at a height of 3,089 meters. Volcán Nuevo lies between its two sister peaks and is the youngest and most active of the three. It has been growing since the 1940s and is now higher than Volcan Viejo.

Terrain

[edit]

The base lodge is at an elevation of 1500 meters and the top of the lifts is at 2200 meters, giving a vertical drop of 700 meters. The area gets an average of 30 feet of natural snowfall each year.

About half the resort area is advanced terrain with free skiing above the treeline. It is an area with bumps and bowls and several fairly short lifts that make it possible to get in quite a few runs. It is quite easy to find relatively pristine conditions, particularly for a day or two after a good snowfall.

This is one of the few ski resorts in the Andes that has a significant wooded area with tree runs. A long, looping easy trail runs along the edge of the area which has a blue and a red trail nearby with more bumps, narrower chutes, and a few challenging steeps.

Get in

[edit]

By plane

[edit]

The nearest airport with scheduled commercial flights is Carriel Sur International Airport (CCP IATA) in Concepción. Numerous daily flights from Santiago go to Concepcion. Shuttle buses from the airport go to the ski resort. Taxis and rental cars are also available.

By train

[edit]

Trains are usually the most comfortable and convenient way to get from Santiago to Chillán. Two trains depart daily from Santiago's Estacion Central Alameda: 7:40am and 4:40pm. Tickets cost as little as US$5 for the 4-1/2 hour trip (an hour faster than taking the bus or driving).

Several bus companies operates several buses per day from Santiago's main bus station to Chillan. The 5-1/2 hour trip costs about US$5. Companies include Pullman, JAC, EME, and Flixbus (among others).

By car

[edit]

The trip from Santiago to Chillan will take 5-1/2 to 7 hours and includes sections with tolls. Also be aware that road closures due to weather are possible at any time.

From the city of Chillán, it is about 80 km to the ski resort. If using Google Maps, specify "Termas de Chillan" as your destination. Google has not yet figured out that the name changed back in 2008. If you rent a car, be aware that local authorities require chains on mountain roads.

There are two ski-in, ski-out hotels within the resort grounds plus a variety of cabins, chalets, and rooms for rent in the nearby (about 20 minutes) valley of Las Trancas. Both hotels offer meal plans and sell discounted lift tickets.

  • 1 Hotel Nevados, Ruta N-55 Km 80, +564 4335 0004. Check-in: 15:00, check-out: 12:00. Comfortable hotel set in an old-growth forest. Hot springs fed pool. At times, the hotel is below the snow line, negating the supposed "ski-in, ski-out" advantage.
  • 2 Hotel Altos Nevados, Las Termas. Modern hotel situated higher on the mountain so snow cover is more reliable.
