Måløy is a small coastal town on the island of Vågsøy at the mouth of Nordfjord, in western Norway.
Understand
[edit | edit source]
Måløy is a harbour and fishing town on Norway's exposed west coast. It is a practical base for trips around Vågsøy, including Kannesteinen, Refviksanden, nearby lighthouses and islands at the outer end of Nordfjord.
Get in
[edit | edit source]The nearest airports are Ørsta-Volda (HOV IATA) and Sandane (SDN IATA). Hurtigruten and Havila coastal ships call at Måløy. Kringom organises regional bus routes.
Get around
[edit | edit source]Local buses serve the area, but many sights around Vågsøy and nearby islands are easiest to reach by car, bicycle or ferry. The Måløy–Oldeide car ferry also calls at Husevågøy on some departures; check the timetable before travel.

Nearby
[edit | edit source]- 5 Selje abbey ruins (Selje kloster). Selje Abbey (Selje kloster) was a Benedictine monastery on the island of Selja near Stad peninsula. The abbey was founded around year 1100. At the time one of Norway's 3 bishops resided at Selje (the others were in Oslo and Trondheim), the bishop shortly after moved to Bergen. The monastery was abandoned before the 1537 Protestant Reformation.
- 6 West cape (Vestkapp (Mt Kjerringa at Stadlandet)). West cape is a panorama point at Stad peninsula (Stadlandet), the northwestern corner of Sogn og Fjordane. This peninsula has some of the roughest weather in Norway and one of the few places where the shipping lane is totally unprotected by islands. Fine panorama in all directions.

- 7 Husevågøy (Husevågøya) (by car ferry from Måløy; check the timetable, as not all departures call at Husevågøy). Husevågøy is a small island at the mouth of Nordfjord, between Vågsøy and Bremangerlandet. It is a quiet day trip from Måløy for coastal walking, cycling on low-traffic roads, harbour and boathouse scenery in Husevåg, and hikes to viewpoints and cultural sites such as Trollholet and the Bronze Age rock carvings at Færeldemyra.
