Millburn is a town in Essex County, New Jersey where South Mountain Reservation, Hobble Falls, and other natural attractions are found.

Millburn was founded by James, the brother of Charles II who had been granted the land in 1664 with the rest of Nieuw Nederland. He later gave Lord Berkeley control of the land because they were fellow fighters in the English Civil War. Later, a Revolutionary War Battle was fought in Millburn, including points like Hessian House and Washington Rock.

Anne Hathaway, Rachel Zoe, and Cathy Scorsese were raised in Millburn’s residential neighborhood of Short Hills, with prominent banker John Stewart purchasing a home on Stewart Street there in the 1880s. The population of Millburn in 2020 was 21,710. Though founded as part of Union County, it was incorporated separately in 1867 as part of Essex County.

Millburn and Short Hills Stations of the Morristown and Gladstone Lines are located in Millburn. NJ Transit Buses 70 and 873 have stops in Millburn. The nearest major airports are JFK and EWR in New York City and Newark, respectively. New Jersey Route 24 and Interstate 78 have exits in Millburn, with Interstates 287 and 80 offering connections.

Bus 70 and 873 go through the town, but Millburn is mostly a walkable city. The main business districts are Morris Turnpike, Short Hills Station, Upper Millburn Avenue, Downtown, and Wyoming Center. A map of Millburn is shown on the right.

Millburn is a town of natural beauty. Some attractions include:

  • Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary, 324 Forest Dr S, +1 973-376-3587. 9AM-4PM. The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum is one of the largest terrarium/aviary complexes in North Jersey. It’s notable for its team, Birdin’ With Glorious Purpose, winning the World Series of Birding in 2026. It’s considered public and thus free.

  • The Cul-de-sacs, All around Millburn, like Rawley Place, Old Short Hills, or Hillside Avenue. Millburn is a prime example of a peri-urban suburb area. You can see the different types of houses there, ranging from Georgian to COVID-era. It’s where much of the super-rich bought their houses, and where many Chinese and Indian immigrants who work in gold-collar jobs helped gentrify certain neighborhoods in cul-de-sacs in Short Hills and South Mountain.
  • Taylor Park, 50 Whittingham Terrace. 6AM-10PM. Taylor Park is one of the commons of the Millburn locals. Relax by the lake, play some basketball, and just enjoy the Jersey charm in general. On the other side of Taylor Park, overgrown leaves lead to walking trails along the Rahway River.
  • Greenwood Gardens, 274 Old Short Hills Rd, +1 978-253-4026. 10AM-5PM. Greenwood Gardens used to be, as the name suggests, the massive backyard of a historic mansion in the Old Short Hills Estates neighborhood. It’s where you can experience culture and architectural beauty in Short Hills and get your perfect quiet out while connecting with other visitors in a historic oasis.
  • 40.75-74.29281 South Mountain Reservation. It is a complex of 2,112 acres on the Rahway River where you can appreciate the beauty of the Appalachians (Piedmont Valley) without sacrificing convenience. attractions such as Hobble Falls, the Rahway River, and Painter’s Point.     • Hemlock Falls, a 30-foot, wider waterfall near Hobble Falls, and where you can rest after a long day of hiking.
    • Crater View, a scenic overlook over Manhattan, which offers some of the best views of the Big Apple.
    • Washington Rock, where Washington's militia stood from high ground before capturing New Brunswick.
  • Paper Mill Playhouse, 22 Brookside Drive, 07041, +1 973-376-4343. Paper Mill Playhouse has been consistently rated as one of the best theaters in New Jersey. It has hosted productions such as 1776, After Midnight, and West Side Story, among others. The only problem with Paper Mill Playhouse is that it only stages one production at a time.

Millburn has both 5th Avenue-level shopping and cheap thrift and variety department stores.

  • Short Hills Mall, 1200 Morris Turnpike, +1 973-376-7350. 10AM-8PM. Short Hills Mall is the Newark area’s primary upscale mega-mall. Access brands like Hermés, Chanel, Dior, and other luxury mainstays. Get your fill at Rolex or Apple for accessories. There are also luxury restaurants, but we’ll get to that later.
  • Millburn Village Mall, 2933 Vauxhall Road. Straddling the border between Millburn and Union, the Village Mall gives mainstays of the middle and working class, like Walgreens, Staples and Subway. It’s more of an outlet than a traditional mall, with its open-air environment.
  • Millburn Shopping Center, 734 Morris Tpke. The Millburn Shopping Center, another Central Jerseyan’s gateway to Millburn, has places like Kings, Massage Envy, Wendy’s and other things you might typically find at an outlet.
  • Millburn Gateway Center, 187 Millburn Ave, +1 201-571-3500. 9AM-9PM. Millburn Gateway Center is where most of the locals get food. Trader Joe’s and CVS are all located here, in case you want to get your trail mix or something during your hike at South Mountain.
  • Millburn Deli/Millburn Deli Too, 328/330 Millburn Ave, +1 973-379-5800. 9AM-6PM. The most famous restaurant in Millburn, Millburn Delicatessen (and its take-out counterpart, Millburn Deli Too) sell famous Sloppy Joe, Panini, and other notable sandwiches. Churning out tasty chaos since 1946, it has undergone a fresh rebrand in 2026 but still maintains that classic Boomer feel.
  • Millburn Restaurant (Millburn Diner), 72 Essex St, +1 973-376-0504. 7AM-11PM. One of the longest working hours in any food joint in Millburn belongs to the very own original Millburn Restaurant, which many call the Millburn Diner. It is undergoing renovation. Homestyle American plates whipped in a warm, relaxed environment with comfy booths and a small patio? You can’t get much more American than that, even though the founders were Italian immigrants in the early 20th century. Let that sink in.
  • Liv Breads, Multiple locations in Millburn, +1 973-218-6922. With a perfect 5 on its location at 257 Essex Street, Liv Breads is a Millburn classic, with 3 locations in Millburn so far. Liv Breads Artisan Bakery and Coffee Bar uses only a few simple ingredients (flour, water, salt, and sourdough starter,) making them healthier than most bakeries. They are also famous for their pickles and tuna sandwich.

  • Millburn Standard, 42 Main St, +1 973-376-4444. 11:30AM-2AM. Millburn is a pretty sober town. However, when you’re at the center of life in the Morris-Essex-Union area, desperate times call for desperate measures. Millburn Standard is the main nightclub and sports bar in Millburn, brewing drinks since 2020. Though a bit loud, their beer is excellent and their tacos have also been highlighted for those who don’t drink much.

  • Hilton Short Hills, 41 John F Kennedy Pkwy, +1 973-379-0100. The average price in New Jersey’s only AAA 5-diamond hotel for a queen room is $250. Hilton Short Hills is a luxury hotel in the north end of Short Hills, near the cul de sacs, gated communities, and the Short Hills Mall. It’s one of the Morris-Essex-Union area’s biggest conference centers, too.
  • The DeBary Inn, 265 Springfield Avenue, +1 908-277-0005. DeBary Inn in Summit/Short Hills North End is a historic Victorian inn 1 block from Downtown Summit and 5 minutes from Short Hills Mall. With quaint small-town inn charm and a continental breakfast, you’ll feel like you’re back in the turn of the 20th century.
