Kura



Kura is a rural town and Local Government Area (LGA) in Kano State, northwestern Nigeria. Its headquarters are in Kura town, located along the A2 highway. Covering about 206 km², the LGA had a population of 144,601 at the 2006 census. Kura is known for agriculture, including rice, wheat, onions, tomatoes, and livestock farming, alongside small-scale trade, pottery, and craft. Predominantly inhabited by Hausa and Fulani people, the area offers insight into rural Sudan savanna life.

Kura LGA spans around 206 km² with a 2006 population of 144,601; estimates for 2022 are around 235,300. The terrain is Sudan savanna, with a hot, partly cloudy dry season and an unpleasant wet season.

The community is mostly Hausa and Fulani, who speak Hausa and Fulfulde. Islam is the dominant religion.

Agriculture is the economic backbone: crops include rice, wheat, onions, tomatoes, cabbage, cucumber, and more; livestock, pottery, craftsmanship, hunting, and trading are common livelihood sources.

The Rafin Kura River traverses the LGA. Average temperature is around 32 °C; rainfall averages 1,300 mm annually.

Kura shares borders with Garun Mallam, Madobi, Dawakin Kudu, and Bunkure LGAs.

By road, Kura is about 35–50 km south of Kano city along the A2 highway.

  • From Kano city: Shared taxis and minibuses leave from motor parks like Kofar Ruwa and Yankaba.
  • From neighboring LGAs: Roads connect Kura with Garun Mallam, Madobi, Dawakin Kudu, and Bunkure, but rural sections may be unpaved.

There is no airport or rail station; the closest airport is Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (KAN).
