Abyei is a town that is administered by Sudan and claimed by South Sudan. It has been one of the flashpoints in the ongoing conflict between the two countries since the Sudanese Civil Wars, as it is disputed between the two countries.

Understand[edit]

The town is heavily disputed between South Sudan and Sudan. There is no reason for travellers to come here, and it is very unsafe.

Abyei was traditionally inhabited by people of the Dinka ethnic group. In the late 2000s, the Second Sudanese Civil War took its toll and most of the Dinka have fled the town, which has now been occupied and razed by northern Sudanese forces.
