Therefore this image is assumed to be in the public domain worldwide, although some of the above categories may be subject to usage restrictions within Romania.

Stema municipiului Zalău, potrivit anexei nr. 11, se compune dintr-un scut roşu, încărcat cu un tânăr înaripat, de aur, ţinând în mâna dreaptă o sabie din acelaşi metal, cu care loveşte un balaur negru, pe care îl calcă cu picioarele. În mâna stângă personajul poartă o balanţă de aur, cu talgerele în echilibru; în şef, pe fond roşu, un brâu crenelat de argint.

Scutul este timbrat cu o coroană murală de argint, formată din şapte turnuri crenelate.

Semnificaţia elementelor însumate:

- brâul crenelat semnifică importanţa strategică a aşezării (poartă de acces spre Transilvania);

- tânărul înaripat evocă lupta împotriva răului;

- balanţa atestă atributul organului administrativ al urbei de a împărţi dreptatea.
