Artikel 2 van de Japanse auteursrechtwet bepaalt dat een werk in aanmerking komt voor auteursrecht wanneer het een productie is waarin gedachten of gevoelens op creatieve wijze worden uitgedrukt en dat valt binnen het literaire, wetenschappelijke, artistieke of muzikale domein. Japanse rechtbanken hebben besloten dat een tekstlogo auteursrechtelijk beschermd moet zijn als het een artistieke uitstraling heeft die artistieke waardering verdient.
