Fake‐Art Seller in Chrysler Fraud Accused in a New Case (English)
7 December 1979
20 April 2025
By all contemporary accounts, it was a similar tale to the one Mr. Hartert told when he sold Mr. Chrysler 90 fake paintings to add to the art collection that the heir to the automobile fortune had assembled at his museum in Provincetown, Mass. Those forgeries were uncovered in 1962 when the collection was sent to Canada for a special showing. The collection ‐ without the forgeries ‐ now is housed in the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Va. Mr. Chrysler never pressed a case against Mr. Herten. At the time, was reported that Mr. Chrysler was concerned about losing the tax‐exempt status of his museum and so decided to let the entire matter expire. Tax laws specify that exempt status is granted for of bona fide works. (English)

Walter P. Chrysler, Jr.'s Story (English)
20 April 2025
Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. (1909–1988), the son of the founder of the Chrysler Corporation, was one of America’s preeminent art collectors. He focused his acquisitions largely on twentieth-century art, American and Old Master paintings, sculpture, and glass. Looking back on Chrysler’s achievement, New York Times critic John Russell wrote, “It would be difficult to spend time in the Chrysler Museum and not come away convinced that the most underrated American art collector of the past fifty years was the late Walter P. Chrysler, Jr.” (English)
