On July 28, officials in Zamfara, Nigeria said abductors had slain over thirty hostages in the Banga village. TRT reported the killings occurred despite a ransom of tens of thousands of dollars being paid.

Jury convicts Minnesota lawmaker Nicole Mitchell of burglary

On July 18, Democratic Minnesota state senator Nicole Mitchell was convicted on two charges, felony first-degree burglary and possession of burglary or theft tools, stemming from a 2024 incident in which she was arrested after allegedly breaking into the home of her "estranged" stepmother in Detroit Lakes. Following her arrest, Mitchell told police that she was at the property in search of her father's ashes and other keep-sakes, though she ultimately did not use this defense during her trial.

UK voting age to be lowered to 16, among other reforms

In the United Kingdom (UK), the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government unveiled plans on July 17 to lower the voting age to 16, following successful reforms by Scotland and Wales. According to official data cited by Reuters,the population of 16–17 year olds in the United Kingdom was 1.6 million, compared to the 48 million eligible to vote at the 2024 general election.
