Understand

[edit | edit source]

Orini Nafpaktia (Mountainous Nafpaktia) is a rugged, forested region in Aetolia-Acarnania, rising behind the coastal town of Nafpaktos. It’s known for its dense fir forests, winding mountain roads, and a scattering of traditional villages that feel largely untouched by mass tourism. Historically isolated, the area developed as a network of small pastoral communities, and that sense of remoteness still defines it today. Visitors come for cool summer temperatures, winter snow in higher elevations, and a slower pace of life centred on nature, food, and local hospitality. While not packed with major monuments, its appeal lies in landscapes, village character, and quiet exploration.

Get in

[edit | edit source]

The main gateway is Nafpaktos on the Gulf of Corinth. From there, a well-maintained but winding mountain road leads inland toward Ano Chora (about 1–1.5 hours depending on route and stops). The drive itself is part of the experience, climbing through olive groves into dense fir forest with occasional viewpoints.

Access is easiest by car; public transport into the mountains is limited and infrequent.

Outdoor activities are the main draw. Hiking is popular, with forest trails, old mule paths, and quiet country roads linking villages like Ano Chora, Elatou, and Katafygio. The area is also suitable for mountain biking and scenic driving, with constantly changing views and very little traffic.

In warmer months, explore shaded valleys, picnic spots, and small rivers; in autumn, the forests are ideal for foraging walks and photography. Winter brings a different atmosphere, with occasional snow turning villages into cozy retreats.

Equally rewarding is simply slowing down—enjoying long meals in village tavernas, sampling local dishes and tsipouro, and taking in the calm, rural setting that defines Orini Nafpaktia.
