Hello, Saqib! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Project:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub.

Would you be kind enough to provide a translation for your new Urdu or Farsi templates? Thanks! --W. Franke-mailtalk 16:48, 23 September 2012 (CEST)

Yes, sure. --Saqib (talk) 16:54, 23 September 2012 (CEST)

Deletion of user page

Hi Saquib, I deleted your user page because you requested it with a Vfd request from page creator. Now you have re-created it as far as I can see identical to the deleted version. Was the deletion request a mistake? Cheers, • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 18:52, 23 September 2012 (CEST)

I didn't requested my user page deletion after I re-created it. --Saqib (talk) 19:05, 23 September 2012 (CEST)
Yes, I see that now. I must have had an old version open in another window. Apoligies for any inconvenience, I can undelete it if you want. • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 10:17, 24 September 2012 (CEST)
Yes, please undelete. Cheers. --Saqib (talk) 10:27, 24 September 2012 (CEST)
Done. • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 11:33, 24 September 2012 (CEST)

Thanks for your edits on some Pakistani destinations! --Globe-trotter (talk) 20:07, 23 September 2012 (CEST)

Hi, I need a districts map of Karachi to put in an article. Can you please help with this? You can use data from here. --Saqib (talk) 15:55, 24 September 2012 (CEST)
Hello, I have added a map of Karachi and created the district articles. I divided the cantonments over the other districts, but let me know if some changes are still needed, as I am not very familiar with the city. Thanks. --Globe-trotter (talk) 19:13, 24 September 2012 (CEST)
Thank you. Is it necessary to have articles on districts as well? --Saqib (talk) 20:37, 24 September 2012 (CEST)
Yes, it is for huge cities. However, would those districts make any sense as articles for travellers? --Globe-trotter (talk) 21:02, 24 September 2012 (CEST)
Erm... not really. Btw, last four section headings in the table of contents (TOC) are missing in this article. --Saqib (talk) 21:15, 24 September 2012 (CEST)
It's a bug I think! Not sure how to fix. Maybe you could think of a sensible way to divide the city for travellers? As said, I am not very familiar with the city. --Globe-trotter (talk) 21:20, 24 September 2012 (CEST)

Hi! Thank you for your rikscha contribution. Taxi touts are a big problem in our South Asia articles. Also Karachi has more Taxi company listings than allowed (max. nine listings). Do you know by chance the moste respected companies? I would prefer to highlight these and delete the rest. Regards, Jc8136 (talk) 16:23, 26 September 2012 (CEST)

Hello. Yes, you're right. I'll take down the unnecessary entries. --Saqib (talk) 16:35, 26 September 2012 (CEST)

Hi Saqib. You seem to be fairly in-the-know regarding South Asian articles, especially Pakistan. I noticed you just district-ized Karachi. I was planning to district-ize Dhaka in Bangladesh, per the talk page, but wasn't sure if it was necessary. It's a city (by some estimates) of nearly 20 million people, so is quite similar to Karachi. From your knowledge, do you think the article should be district-ized? Thanks, JamesA >talk 16:29, 30 September 2012 (CEST)

Hello James. Yes Dhaka is a huge city and if you're willing to fill the Dhaka district articles, you should district-ize it. I also found Guangzhou and Tehran, both huge cities as well but not yet district-ized. By the way, I felt like that Dhaka has a population of nearly 15 million people only. --Saqib (talk) 17:42, 30 September 2012 (CEST)
Thanks for the tip, I'll go ahead and split it up then. Those 2 cities definitely need a split as well; I can help with mapping if you need it. Yeah, estimates for Dhaka's population are all over the place, thanks to a lack of proper census taking. For example, I'm pretty sure most of the slum dwellers are not recorded in the census. I guess official figures put it at 14-17 million, but many international organisations and news agencies estimate more. JamesA >talk 04:38, 1 October 2012 (CEST)

Re:History

Hi Saqib. Are you asking why there are not many articles with a large history section? Or are you saying the history section is too long? I guess not many countries have it because most travellers don't deal with a country's history so much. They deal with the sights, attractions, activities, hotels, food, etc. The Understand section is more like a summary of the Wikipedia article. I also think it's too long. We're trying to give a brief summary to help travellers; not train them up like they are about to be tested on it. JamesA >talk 12:03, 1 October 2012 (CEST)

Yes, I was trying to say that few articles have long history sections and needs to get in brief. By the way, I was expecting your reply on your own talk page not mine but anyway. --Saqib (talk) 12:11, 1 October 2012 (CEST)
Feel free to plunge forward and write some history then! :) Yeah, after years of doing it elsewhere, I'm used to not keeping conversations together and instead replying to people on their own talk pages. JamesA >talk 12:21, 1 October 2012 (CEST)

Karachi

Hi Saqib, thank you very much for the hard work at the Karachi article. It seems to move in a very good direction. Currently Karachi is at the usable level but the districtification is a big step forward to guide. The main advantage of the guide status would be that according to Wikivoyage:Article_status we could feature it as first Pakistani Destination of the Month on our Main page. I know it is a huge task that will last some time but if you would be willing we could list it as Wikivoyage:Collaboration_of_the_month and jointly get it to the level where in 2013 it could be featured. Would you be willing to lead that task? I would then try to get other pointed to that action, so efforts will faster reward. To give you an idea what we would be up to, see Mos to would a perfect article would require. Jc8136 (talk) 13:03, 5 October 2012 (CEST)

Hello. Thanks for your appreciation Jan. Yes, I'm willing to get Karachi article to the Destination of the Month level. Right now, I'm in the process of cleaning-up the article and required a lot of copyediting as I'm not native English so English is bad. It would be great if article would be listed in the Wikivoyage:Collaboration_of_the_month so many other editors can get involved in the cleanup process. --Saqib (talk) 13:12, 5 October 2012 (CEST)
Saqib, great! I will setup a Cotm nomination and asked them experienced travellers who visited Pakistan to assist in that task. Jc8136 (talk) 13:15, 5 October 2012 (CEST)
Sure. --Saqib (talk) 13:17, 5 October 2012 (CEST)
First draft is done. Feel free to add your points. As more detailed it gets, the better people can help out. Jc8136 (talk) 13:27, 5 October 2012 (CEST)
Great idea, Jan. I'll help copyedit, if you like, Saqib. JamesA >talk 14:53, 5 October 2012 (CEST)
Sure James, you're more than welcome :) --Saqib (talk) 14:56, 5 October 2012 (CEST)

Template:Shortcut

Hi, Saqib. I noticed you created Template:Shortcut and started adding it to various pages. Our convention, per Wikivoyage:Using Mediawiki templates, is to get approval for new templates first, before creating and using them. Would you mind starting a discussion, probably at the Pub, on this new template before adding it to any more pages? Thanks. LtPowers (talk) 19:41, 7 October 2012 (CEST)

Saqib, I see you've created several more templates without discussing them first. I appreciate your enthusiasm for the project, but it is important that you discuss and get consensus for new templates before creating them, not after. LtPowers (talk) 19:30, 14 October 2012 (CEST)
Apart from shortcut template, yes I've created few but not several templates, such as Template:User page, Template:Busy and Template:Fromwp. Creating shortcut template without the consensus and then, start adding it to many pages was a mistake but these templates I created since then are all user namespace templates and must be available to use by users. Thus I didn't deemed it necessary to discuss and get consensus on creating such templates. --Saqib (talk) 19:53, 14 October 2012 (CEST)
I do not understand your reasoning. There is nothing that makes user page templates special, no exception carved out for them, and I certainly don't see why they "must be available". All templates follow the same rules. -- D. Guillaume (talk) 20:24, 14 October 2012 (CEST)
You're right. Anyway, If you think any of the template I created shouldn't be on the wiki. Please nominate it for deletion. --Saqib (talk) 20:30, 14 October 2012 (CEST)

Thanks!

Thanks for your recent VIP alert over on WT. Promotion comes rapidly, eh? --W. Franke-mailtalk 20:52, 19 October 2012 (CEST)

I've been busy on WT for more than 6 years - the majority of time as an IP. I'm waiting for an answer from Peterfitzgerald to this question before I bother putting my head above the parapet again here, Sir... --W. Franke-mailtalk 01:26, 20 October 2012 (CEST)

Speedy delete

When you nominate an article for speedy deletion, could you place the tag at the top of the page? So you don't wipe out all contents on the page. Thanks. --Globe-trotter (talk) 21:05, 21 October 2012 (CEST)

Yes sure. --Saqib (talk) 08:40, 22 October 2012 (CEST)

block

hi, and thanks for being alert. The block for this IP was a result of a followup checkuser investigation to a spambot editing from a registered account (globally locked). Such blocks are practiced for short time (1-2 days) to prevent other spambots from the same IP to spread. Pundit (talk) 17:09, 9 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi again, a colleague steward drew my attention to the fact that I mistakenly blocked the IP locally, instead of globally - which I've just amended. Many apologies for the confusion! Pundit (talk) 17:17, 9 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Jersey

Hello! You have just undone a change which I have made to Jersey. I can assure you there are no cities on the island of Jersey. Danrok (talk) 18:03, 10 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

I believe, but I guess we're using "City" instead of "Parish" here on WV. --Saqib (talk) 18:17, 10 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
The two words are not interchangeable, and have an entirely different meaning. To describe a parish as a city is nonsensical. Can you provide a link to the relevant policy here? Danrok (talk) 18:30, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Isn't parish is a church territorial unit and it has nothing to do with civilian administration. --Saqib (talk) 18:48, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Depends on where you are; Louisiana has parishes instead of counties, for instance. LtPowers (talk) 19:47, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
In Jersey, parishes are administrative sub-divisions, each with it's own elected officials. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parishes_of_Jersey Danrok (talk) 12:05, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Wikivoyage:Geographical hierarchy#Cities — in a nutshell, we don't see the need to fuss too much about the wording, but do have a need for consistent templates for the destination guides. I gather that Parishes are the administrative divisions of Jersey, not municipalities? If so, I would recommend handling this similar to how we divided up content on Barbados, i.e., only use a "regions" header, explain that the following divisions are known as "parishes," and try to keep the division simple, flat, and neat. Does that make sense?
No, referring to a village as a city does not make any sense. Apples are apples, not oranges. Danrok (talk) 12:09, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Also, please move this discussion to Talk:Jersey. --Peter Talk 18:51, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Alternatively, we could simplify the subdivisions drastically, since there are only 100,000 people living on the island, and try to limit the number of sub-destination guides to 3-4? --Peter Talk 18:54, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Tanda

Would you mind at least explaining that hard revert [2]? Did I get it wrong, in terms of location? JuliasTravels (talk) 20:29, 23 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Tanda is a small and rather un-touristy town in Gujrat district so wouldn't it be better if goes near to its respective article? --Saqib (talk) 20:45, 23 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well, touristy or not isn't directly relevant here. I recently opened a topic about exactly that kind of cases (see the Pub), and it was explained that the current policy is that the lowest level region should contain links to every city article it contains, thus any given city should always be listed in its immediate parent region. If the list becomes too long, the region should be divided. That would be a good idea for Punjab, I think. But until someone creates such district articles, Tanda should be listed in Punjab too then. If you don't agree, feel free to discuss it further in the Pub. I would agree with you in principle, as you can see in that discussion, but it makes sense to deal with such places the same throughout Wikivoyage. If you know Punjab, it would be great if you could look into those districts further. But more in general, I suggest next time you at least explain when you revert a colleague, as it's unfriendly and not very constructive, this way ;-) Cheers, JuliasTravels (talk) 21:03, 23 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, if you mind my revert. Sure, next time, I will be more careful while reverting edits. Fyi, Gujrat is a district itself thus you can say it is the lowest level region article for Tanda. --Saqib (talk) 06:46, 24 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your reply ;-) I was aware that Tanda is in Gujrat, but if I'm not mistaken we don't have a district article for Gujrat yet, only a city article for its capital. I saw you started a discussion about which/how many districts to use for the Punjab map. I would say whatever comes out of that discussion should also be the structure for the district-articles that should be created for Punjab. Gujrat (district) should probably be one of those ;-) I'll put a link to that Talk:Punjab_(Pakistan) in the Pub, hopefully some others will join in and we can speed up that process. I'm just no expert at all on Pakistan or on the creation of sub-regions/districts, so I can't be of much help. JuliasTravels (talk) 12:09, 24 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Any comment here?

I have started work on an article that might eventually become "On the trail of Kipling's Kim" or some such title. The draft is at User:Pashley/Sandbox. Obviously, this could use comment from a Pakistani, and you are the first fairly active one I notice.

This is not urgent. The article is nowhere near done and not even under active development right now. Pashley (talk) 13:25, 29 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sure, I will look into it. --Saqib (talk) 15:04, 29 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Deleting Hotel Articles

These hotels have been deleted from the main Wikipedia site with everyone there, including administrators under the impression that Wikivoyage is the place for such articles? If you are telling me this is not! then this project is a waste of space and I will not waste my time contributing here. If this is the case Wikivoyage is doomed to failure, as articles on countries, resorts, places of interest can already be found in the pages of Wikipedia. Sorry to have interfered with your project!!!Cheeseladder (talk) 11:15, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Off-course, you can add hotel listings in their respective articles but you can't create an article solely for a hotel unless the hotel is so large and complex but that's very rare. --Saqib (talk) 11:24, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
To my knowledge, there is no such article at all, nor should there be. Cheeseladder, if you want to create a Hotelwiki, go ahead and propose it, and I wish you lots of luck. Wikipedia articles about places of interest are not the same as Wikivoyage articles. Whether Wikivoyage is "doomed to failure" or not won't be up to you, but having lots of individual articles on hotels certainly is not a good way for a non-commercial site to try to flourish. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:21, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

A friendly reminder...

...not to sweep discussions from the pub until they've been dormant for a month. I had seen the discussion on the restaurant listings in Novi Sad on the mobile site, and wanted to weigh in - but by the time I got home to a proper computer where I could edit Wikivoyage, it was swept away!

Pakistan divisions articles

Hi, Saqib. If you're around, please look at the latest batch of divisions articles. [3] Are these divisions currently in existence? Should all the articles be summarily deleted, or subjected to Vfd?

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:28, 25 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sorry Ikan Keken, I didn't noticed these edits since I'm busy organising WLM in my country. I noticed all these edits as based on administrative division, which was abolished by Pakistan government after the reforms of 2000. Please see here. I don't know about others but In 2008, nine divisions of Punjab province and few divisions of Sindh province were restored again. I think it won't be bad idea if we use these old divisions to make articles hierarchy. --Saqib (talk) 08:17, 26 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Good luck with your efforts (what's WLM, in this case?), and thanks for the link. What about divisions that are at least partly in the Indian-administered part of Kashmir? Do you know if they currently exist? I find this whole thing very confusing. I guess what someone has to do is make up a list of the divisions and other administrative entities in Pakistan and India that IP users have created articles about, and then decide what to do with them. I am not familiar enough with Pakistan to have an easy time dealing with these, myself.
All the best,
Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:33, 26 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
WLM (Wiki Love Monuments) is world's largest photo contest organised worldwide by Wikimedia chapters every year during September. If you asking me about Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, I don't know. By the way, don't worry, I'll try to make a list of divisions of Pakistan by tonight and let you know. --Saqib (talk) 08:45, 26 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

On the trail of Kipling's Kim

I am not certain how much use this article, or On the trail of Marco Polo which is also mostly my writing, will be to anyone though they might help in travel planning. I do them mostly because they are fun to write.

Panorama on White Sands National Monument

Looking over the Wikivoyage image policy, a maximum image thumbnail of 400px for the lead photo is suggested. My panorama was wider than that limit. However, it's clear from other articles that using a panorama as a pagebanner is ok. The White Sands article needed a lead in image that gave a real impression of the scale and look of the place. --Footwarrior (talk) 21:00, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'll crop the panorama image and will add it to White Sands National Monument article as page banner. --Saqib (talk) 21:03, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
A suggestion on tact. You reverted my edit less that 10 minutes after added the page banner. My impression was that you were telling a newbie to shove off and leave this page alone. As a long time Wikipedia editor I found this rather strange behavior. The policy is to work with other editors, especially those who are new to the project. Fix the problems instead of using reversion to tear out the contributions of others. --Footwarrior (talk) 21:19, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'm really sorry for reverting your edit. --Saqib (talk) 21:31, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

South America Regions

I have another simple request, but this time is applicable for it:voy only, because en:voy has a different division.

In it:America del Sud I've prepared a new map that highlight 4 sub-continental region. But for each one of these four regions I need an appropriate map. Without them I've just reused the en:voy map.

Your activity should be pretty easy: properly cut the image & convert into grey the country not included in each of those region.

Let me know if I wasn't enough clear in the request. Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 21:42, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sure. --Saqib (talk) 22:26, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've seen the first one. The color are ok, but I was thinking something different for the size. Look for example the maps used for the sub-continental region of Africa. For example Central Africa: there's an higher zoom and more info. --Andyrom75 (talk) 22:32, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Done. --Saqib (talk) 22:52, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

You need map of Brazil as well? I don't have an account on Italian WV yet and this account is not belongs to me. --Saqib (talk) 23:29, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've just ask because the map has been added by that account :-) ... anyway, Map of Brazil it's fine, the last missing is it:Guiana. --Andyrom75 (talk) 23:40, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Actually the map file was renamed that's why the file name on Italian WV was changed by User:Courcelles. --Saqib (talk) 23:44, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ah, got it. Thank a lot for the new maps, now the articles look much more better. Do you think that could worth to enrich those maps with more details, likes major lakes/rivers/cities/others? --Andyrom75 (talk) 06:25, 12 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Obviously. --Saqib (talk) 08:28, 12 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

It would be easier for me if you give me a reference please. --Saqib (talk) 09:37, 12 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ok, let's try with the first one, it:Guiana. From the maps in Suriname, French Guiana and Guyana, you can see where the major lakes, rivers, cities are, that you can make the Guiana map sligthly bigger, and insert those details. ...this is an idea, but if you have better idea, feel free to use it :-) --Andyrom75 (talk) 15:06, 13 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Galapagos Islands

There are three different contents in which we can write cruises for, budget, mid range, and splurge. My company offers all three of those, if I only publish under one, how will people know that we offer the other two? That is why I published Haugan Cruises under all three. I hope that's not a problem. Otherwise, this page is very unorganized and illogical for users to find out more information about the Galapagos and what type of cruises there are. —The preceding comment was added by Galapagos Luxury Cruises (talkcontribs)

But you should avoid duplicating a listing please. --Saqib (talk) 17:25, 13 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Laundry at Sucre

Hi Sakib,

I just noticed, that you have reverted my edit adding Laundry in Sucre. I am new to wikivoyage. What did I did wrong? What is the correct way how to mention this Laundry on wikivoyage?

Thank you in advance for your help, Radek

Hello Radek, welcome to Wikivoyage and thanks for contributing to Sucre. Please avoid first-person pronouns. See Wikivoyage:Use of pronouns. --Saqib (talk) 18:15, 13 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi Sakib, thanks for info. I updated the article. No we inside. Is it appropriate to mention, who recommend the service to us or somehow justify the quality? The current text is probably more wikivoyage correct, but I feel it is less informative then previous one. Thanks Radek --Radekdostal (talk) 18:26, 13 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Good attempt Radek. I think it's totally fine now. --Saqib (talk) 18:36, 13 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

New admin

My condolences, Sakib, on your demotion to janitor ;) I have flipped your switch. I would encourage you to read over the Wikivoyage:Administrator's handbook, which has a combination of reminders about relevant local policies governing use of admin tools, and tips on how to use them effectively. While I'm fully confident you are familiar with the various relevant policy pages, it never hurts to reread Wikivoyage:How to handle unwanted edits (in particular), Wikivoyage:Deletion policy, and Wikivoyage:Protected pages. Photo hunt

Hey Saqib, I left you a note in my edit summary on Mexico City/Centro, but thought I'd mention it here too. Per Wikivoyage:Cleanup#Photo hunt!, we're trying to leave the redlinked images, so we know for which subjects we need to find new photos. In other words, if we remove the redlinks, we won't always know what sort of images to replace the old ones with. --Peter Talk 17:33, 26 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

My real life identity

I'm writing to you because you were the first one to welcome me to Wikivoyage and I also see from "stalking" your edits that you seem to be more genuinely interested in developing a useful travel guide (rather than playing silly ego games) than many other admins here.

Currently there seem to be a whole bunch of editors (many who should know better) who are being diverted from our primary goals by speculating on who I am and who I'm not. User:Rschen7754 has clarified that this time-wasting speculation is unfortunately not going to be resolved by a check user request so I would ask the following favour:

May I (under a promise of confidentiality from you) e-mail you scans of my Irish birth certificate, Northern Ireland Electoral Identity Card and other personal ID so that you can assist in putting all this nonsense to bed? --90.215.245.164 13:27, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Deletion discussions

Saqib, I'm not sure you're closing VfDs according to policy.

Take Category talk:Hatnote templates#VfD. Our policy is that pages are guilty until proven innocent; that is, there must be a clear consensus to keep a page. There was no such consensus on this discussion. The discussion should have been left in place or the category should have been deleted.

Please revert your closure ASAP.

-- LtPowers (talk) 12:53, 8 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sorry LtPowers, but I'm still in the learning process. Btw, you could had reverted it on your own. --Saqib (talk) 08:45, 9 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
It's not usually considered proper to revert other admins' actions before discussing them, unless they are truly egregious. I understand you are still learning, but you did promise to follow policy when you became an admin. LtPowers (talk) 13:38, 9 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
But I didn't violated any policy. Did I? --Saqib (talk) 13:42, 9 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I wouldn't use the word "violated", but Wikivoyage:Deletion policy says "Other contributors can discuss whether the article or image should be deleted. Articles and images are presumed guilty until proven innocent. After fourteen (14) days of discussion, if a consensus is reached to retain an article, it won't be deleted. Otherwise it will be deleted by an administrator." In other words, if there's no consensus to keep, then the discussion should not be closed with a "keep" result. Maps request

Hi Saqib,

  1. Guiana (South American) that we were talking in the past: basically to enrich the current one with details
  2. Creta (Greece): it's a new map. You can be inspired by this one, or other similar that you can find online. This map will be implemented also in the en article.

Map request

Hello Saqib! As you're probably more familiar with South Asia's geography than the any other map maker; here's an article that could use one or a few maps: On_the_trail_of_Kipling's_Kim. ϒpsilon (talk) 16:48, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'm willing to make a map for this article, but this article already have a map. --Saqib (talk) 17:13, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Great! I realize I should've included a link to the talk page of the article, Pashley indeed has added a map but he says it's "far from ideal". A good map would be one that is made in particular for this article and include also the smaller cities and places discussed in the article. ϒpsilon (talk) 17:29, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
If you say so, I'll make a Wikivoyage-styled map of it. --Saqib (talk) 17:44, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your mail, however I think a better idea would be to put the map somewhere everyone can see it e.g. in User:Saqib/Maps (if you upload it locally on Wikivoyage, not on Commons, you can delete it afterwards if necessary because you're an administrator) . Especially Pashley who in practice has written the whole article would probably like to take a look. ϒpsilon (talk) 09:15, 18 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Map has been uploaded. See File:On the trail of Kipling's Kim.png. --Saqib (talk) 11:25, 18 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Quite good looking! And also the green color goes well together with the many greenish pictures in the article. ϒpsilon (talk) 15:02, 18 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Let's move the discussion to the article's talk page: Talk:On_the_trail_of_Kipling's_Kim#Map.28s.29.3F ϒpsilon (talk) 16:06, 18 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, can you help me?

I want to report that the user called Ikan Kekek annoys users unnecessarily, I want to report this user with privileges who apparently likes to use his privileges to block accounts to any user without any proper reason.

Thank you for your help. --Theryx7 (talk) 02:38, 18 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I still haven't blocked you, despite your edit warring and intemperate and abusive response to requests to engage in substantive discussions on Talk:Colombia and, finally, warnings. And now you think you can divide one admin from the others? I assure you, that won't work. Just be cooperative. Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:16, 18 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Blocks

Saqib, i just saw that you added UserJejumaster on the user ban nomination page. Blocks that are less than a day can be used without prior nomination per our policy [[4]]. Only if someone challenges that move (not the offender) then a nomination is needed. Cases like this offender works best with a couple of shorter but increasing blocks, e.g. starting with 15-30 mins, then 30-35min and then two hours. There is no perfect strategy but my experience is that frequent shorter blocks annoy marketeers more than one longer block. I will archieve your nomination. Regards, jan (talk) 09:24, 18 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Deletion policy

Hi Saqib. I saw that you nominated Wikivoyage:ShareMap for VfD on July 6th, then unilaterally redirected all its content to Wikivoyage:How_to_draw_a_map#ShareMap.org on the 18th, before the discussion period was closed. In future, please wait the prescribed 14 days before taking action on VfD's. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 03:21, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

That's strange, André.
Looking at the edit history of Wikivoyage:ShareMap, I can not see any re-directs being made for it at all, and especially none by Saqib. I do see him quite properly placing the Vfd template notice there on 6 July 2013 when he nominated it for deletion.
I do see relevant information about the ShareMap website in that Wikivoyage:How_to_draw_a_map#ShareMap.org sub section - but that information has been there since before Saqib's nomination.
Perhaps Saqib's comment of 18 July 2013 that "Information has been moved " was merely meant in the helpful sense of I see that most of the relevant information in this Vfd'ed article is already present in the Wikivoyage:How_to_draw_a_map#ShareMap.org sub section. ?
PS: Changing the topic entirely, I have now added some images to Nelson (England) that should make it clearer that one currently has no commercial sleeping opportunities there and why few visitors would consider it as a travel destination. Even if one were interested in industrial or urban decay, I can think of better locations in my home city of Glasgow that do not have an article. Even if Nelson (England) escapes deletion because my objection to it remaining is discounted (I do hope it doesn't) then I'm still not going to create those strange articles about Castlemilk or Drumchapel. I'd much rather see the Vfd policy of "one persistent vote for Vfd kills the Vfd candidate" even in the face of many rational objections, changed.--W. Franke-mailtalk 09:13, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Frank for the clarification on behalf of me. And you're right, I didn't moved the ShareMap information to that sub-section as well. That was added by User:(WT-en)_JackMapper in May 2012. Andre, please change your comment here. Btw, why you're not closing VfD's properly? You didn't redirected Wikivoyage:ShareMap as Pashley said. Also, you are not placing the VfD result on the talk pages of the kept pages and sometimes you forget to remove the VfD template.--Saqib (talk) 12:41, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
André:I'd better point out (quite redundantly -please forgive me André and Saquib) that Saquib's first language is not English and his comment above is only intended as a gentle reminder and in no way as a reprimand. We're all fallible and it's sometimes difficult to give that light touch on the shoulder or cheeky grin that puts comments in context or scale when we're not communcicationg face-to-face, eh? Keep cool! (It's 26 degrees in Glasgow here today - almost a record!) --W. Franke-mailtalk 13:17, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about that, it was a foolish mistake on my part. The consensus seems to be redirect, so I'll edit the VfD archive page accordingly. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 15:02, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Listen, Saqib (and W. Frank, and anyone else who may be reading this). I know I've been making a lot of sloppy mistakes lately in my duties as an administrator. Without going into too much detail regarding my off-wiki life, my mother has breast cancer and is beginning chemotherapy treatments in two weeks, I'm putting in a ridiculous amount of hours at work, and my living room is still full of half-unpacked boxes after having moved to this apartment on June 1st because the sheer amount of stuff I have to deal with has prevented me from fully unpacking. All this stress has affected the quality of decisions I've made and the number of obvious mistakes that have flown over my head, and it's also caused me to snap at people with little provocation, as I did here, and for which I apologize to you, Saqib.
I enjoy working on articles on Wikivoyage, as it is my chance to escape from all that for a little while. But perhaps it'd be best for me to curtail my activities as an admin for a while. I don't want to have the tools taken away from me, and I may chime in from time to time on administrative issues, but I guess what's more important is for me to focus more attention on the immediate pressing issues in my off-wiki life. Again, I apologize.
-- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 03:02, 21 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Don't be sorry again Andre. I am so sorry to hear about your mother. May Allah give your mother a swift recovery. --Saqib (talk) 12:33, 21 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Saqib - one comment on the VFD that was just completed for Prq. In general unless something is obvious spam, vandalism or inappropriate content it shouldn't be deleted after just a couple of hours on the VFD page. See Wikivoyage:Deletion policy#Speedy deletion - in this case, a speedy delete might be justified under the "articles that cannot possibly ever be destinations or travel topics" provision, but if there is any doubt it is usually standard practice to solicit comments on the VFD page for a long enough period to allow the creator and any other interested parties to comment. In this case, there really may not be such a place in Mongolia and the article thus deserves to be deleted, but since there wasn't 100% certainty it would have been better to wait before actually deleting. Hopefully that makes sense - I don't want to deter you, but at the same time it's important to strike a balance between keeping the site free of garbage and allowing people to provide feedback. -- Ryan • (talk) • 16:16, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Well noted Ryan. Sorry for being so hasty. Do you want me to undo my deletion of the said page? --Saqib (talk) 16:25, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
If anyone asks for the article to be restored then it should be, but I don't think you need to restore it otherwise. My comment above was mainly made to ensure that VFDs aren't regularly closed after such a short period - in general if something is worth listing on the VFD page then it's probably worth giving it a few days (if not the full two weeks) for discussion. -- Ryan • (talk) • 16:40, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've notified Frank, the creator of "Prq" page, if he'll say, I'll undo my deletion and will be very careful the next time. --Saqib (talk) 16:53, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I didn't want to go into hospital without writing clearly that Saqib did notify me of the speedy deletion, and I think that was absolutely the correct thing to do (even if it's against current policy to do that with real places {which should either have to wait indefinitely for some substantive and useful information to be added OR instead be re-directed - although it can be difficult bordering on impossible to redirect if the creator of the page did not provide sufficient information in the stupid stub to even know with certainty where it is}.
I created Prq (spelling varies depending on the transliteration system one is using and other alternative spellings are better known in Russian or Mandarin) purely to illustrate (in another VFD discussion about Nelson) the deficiencies in making it so easy for "drive-by" editors to create one click, one line "articles" with one click skeleton creation templates that automatically grade the subsequent useless stub as an "Outline" article.
Both you, Ryan, and Saqib are correct in this instance (except that, my understanding of current policy is, you should always wait a minimum of 14 days before closing a deletion of anything other than a "speedy delete" and not just "a few days" { - when I come out of hospital next week, I'll want to comment more on the Vfd for Nelson}).
Saquib is usually very punctilious and fair and one of a decreasing minority that bother to notify the creator of an article or even actually apply a Vfd template! --W. Franke-mailtalk 21:10, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Frank, Is everything fine? Why you going to the hospital? --Saqib (talk) 21:17, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

When I get out I am absolutely determined to resolve this Puppet nonsense or die trying. I am not retired. By mistake, a stupid friend of mine wrote "retired" instead of "away". I had an serious accident Saturday and fractured few bones. I am admitted in hospital and won't be able to edit for few days. --Saqib (talk) 14:18, 28 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Wow, I am glad to hear you haven't left us for good, but very sorry to hear of your accident! I hope your recovery is as speedy as the speediest of deletions! Texugo (talk) 15:15, 28 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, sad and good news in one :-) Sorry to hear you had an accident. Best wishes and I hope you'll recover well and fast. JuliasTravels (talk) 15:29, 28 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Very sorry to hear about this accident. Best wishes to you for a speedy and complete recovery! Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:03, 28 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks for all your good wishes. Going through pain, sometimes unbearable but thanks God I'm still alive. Now only wishing I recover without any surgery. --Saqib (talk) 19:36, 28 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I hope the pain diminishes soon. At least you seem to have Wi-Fi access and your wits are not dulled. We all wish you that you heal quickly and completely, Saqib! --W. Franke-mailtalk 14:09, 29 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Just to say, sorry to hear about your accident; I hope you get better soon! :) --Nick talk 14:24, 29 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Saqib, I was passing by for some stuff and I've red about your accident. I'm very sorry about it, but considering your status it's seem that it has been a very bad accident, so I'm glad to see that you still have enough strenght to chat with us. I wish you to best recovery. Take care and see you soon! --Andyrom75 (talk) 11:50, 30 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Hi Andy, thanks for your concerns and well wishes. Yes, it was a really serious accident, I got spinal fractures and a fracture on foot. Doctors recommended strict bed rest for few weeks. There's nothing much to do while in bed so I'll keep visiting WV but unfortunately, I won't be able to contribute much to site because I can't properly sit and while typing I feel some pain in my hand as well. --Saqib (talk) 12:46, 30 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sad to hear what happened to you and hopefully you'll get well quickly. (And of course it's nice that you didn't retire) ϒpsilon (talk) 16:35, 30 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Wow, that's really horrible. Perhaps a voice-command program can be downloaded from somewhere, to help you amuse yourself while you recover. I hope you have full range of motion after your bed rest is finished. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:48, 30 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry now about WV, there's nothing more precious than your life. I wish you a quick recovery, and as soon as it happens give me a whistle. We'll be more than glad to see you back on track! ;-) A friendly warm embrace. --Andyrom75 (talk) 09:06, 1 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Just wanted to say… Thank you Andy. Sure, will definitely inform you guys when I'll be out of bed. Have a great day! --Saqib (talk) 09:26, 1 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I hope you're feeling a bit better now, Saqib.

Have they given you an idea when they expect you to be able to get out of bed? --W. Frankemailtalk 21:42, 11 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks for your concerns Frank. I'm out of bed already but since the leg cast is still on, I'm staying at home. I've medical check-up on Monday and I wish they will remove the cast after examining X-rays. --Saqib (talk) 22:17, 11 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Larfistan

How dare you delete my page about Larfistan? It is a real country where everyone larfs. Don't ever block me from Wikivoyage again, nor block any of my socks. Editing is fun. Socking is beautiful, no matter what they say. Fight for equality for sockpuppets! PotatoFinsofDoom (talk) 13:31, 13 September 2013 (UTC) PotatoFinsofDoom (talk) 13:31, 13 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

You are the vandal, not me. I just make pages. You delete them. Destroying other people's hard work without their permission is vandalism. Otherwise I could just go to your house and break everything claiming I'm an "administrator" and you "vandalized" your house by putting your stuff in it, and then kick you out of your house and it would be ok. PotatoFinsofDoom (talk) 13:46, 13 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

You have nerve

DO NOT EVER DELETE MY PAGES AGAIN! IF YOU DO I WILL SEE TO IT THAT WIKIVOYAGE IS BANNED IN AMERICA FOR VIOLATING FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS. AND THEN I WILL EDIT FROM OTHER COUNTRIES. PS I MIGHT NOT BE A SOCK I MIGHT BE A SHOE BUT LOOK AT MY USERPAGE IF YOU'RE FEELING BLUE PotatoFinsofDoom (talk) 13:42, 13 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Bad jokes and other deleted nonsense

Do you know about Wikivoyage's funniest page? Looking at the vandal's various outbreaks on your talk page, I guess "Larfistan"'s content also was idiotic enough to be copied into a section or even a subpage of that page before deletion. ϒpsilon (talk) 15:19, 18 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure about it, but if you think, that can be added to this page. --Saqib (talk) 16:53, 18 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wiki Loves Monuments Banners

Hi; I noticed that Wikivoyage currently has two simultaneous banners up for Wiki Loves Monuments -- one via CentralNotice and one via a Sitenotice. It seems odd to me, so is that what was really intended? If not; Romaine is the contact for the CentralNotice banner and I can help with coding if so desired. Mwalker (WMF) (talk) 00:11, 24 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Walker, I've removed the Sitenotice. Thanks for letting me know. --Saqib (talk) 05:06, 24 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Baan Amphur

I marked this article for speedy deletion. You reverted it. The Wiki Speedy Deletion Template plainly states "If you believe this article does not meet the criteria for speedy deletion, replace this notice with a {{vfd}} notice and nominate this article for deletion on the Votes for deletion page." Thus, rather than a revert, I think it would be more productive and less inflammatory to just follow this guidance. Seligne (talk) 15:15, 24 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I apologies for my hard revert, but frankly speaking I haven't read that note on the template. Btw, you're an admin and you can simply delete an article if you think it should be speedy deleted rather than inserting speedy deletion template in it. --Saqib (talk) 15:23, 24 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Frankly, Saqib, when I saw the original article I couldn't believe my eyes. I was wanting another set of eyeballs to ensure I was not in error. Thanx, Seligne (talk) 00:10, 25 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
I could not believe: 1. That I could have missed seeing an article as crappy as this. 2. How the article contains zero useful info. 3. That this article has been around for a good while, imported from WT and no one has deep-sixed it. 4. There is no such place as Ban Amphur. Seligne (talk) 16:22, 25 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
I wonder if you know about Ban Muang Kut article. --Saqib (talk) 16:35, 25 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for pointing it out! I was not aware of it as it is not tethered to any region, only to Thailand. I will dig into it. Seligne (talk) 09:36, 26 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Having searched documentation, I still have no clue how to delete an article. Can you point me in the right direction? Seligne (talk) 11:17, 26 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Look for a down arrow or triangle next to the "View History" tab. If you mouse over the triangle you should see "delete", "move", and "protect". Click the delete action to delete the page. --Saqib (talk) 11:33, 26 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Seligne (talk) 12:19, 26 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Empty outlines

Hi, Saqib. I wanted to see if you were aware of the current discussion at Wikivoyage talk:Deletion policy#Summary; it involves some recent deletions you carried out. LtPowers (talk) 00:51, 27 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I'm aware of that discussion. Please let me know if I made mistakes while deleting the articles? --Saqib (talk) 07:46, 27 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well, in short, yes; you deleted articles that had content beyond what the agreement was limited to. We've undeleted some of them, but we haven't yet gone through all of them to see if any others need to be undeleted. Your help and input would be appreciated. LtPowers (talk) 12:30, 27 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, when I realised that I deleted some articles that were not meant for deletion, I restored them and I will restore few more when I get some time. Sorry for the inconvenience caused. --Saqib (talk) 13:47, 27 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello, just to say thanks in general despite the mishaps. It was a fairly huge task to be undertaken within a couple of days and I didn't fancy doing all by my lonesome. -- torty3 (talk) 14:08, 27 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
LtPowers, I've restored all the articles I deleted on September 25th which contain some listings. --Saqib (talk) 14:39, 27 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Saqib! LtPowers (talk) 01:30, 28 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Consistency

Dear Saqib,

i don't want to start the bitter discussion again, that currently breaks this community. You asked my why i leave, so to create transparency, i reply on-wiki. In essence to points make me bitter

  1. Consistency: In my religion it is called: Preaching water, drink wine Several admins here prefer to second guess me but don't act if they are provided with ample evidence of Frank's games
  2. Trust: As my first ban nomination proved beside Ikan, no one really got engaged. Still there was ample advice about policy. I rather now call the losses and leave instead of continuing bullshit bingo here

All the best for you, jan (talk) 08:26, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to see you go Jan. Please seriously re-consider returning in some capacity. --Saqib (talk) 08:31, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Blocking

Thanks for fixing my typo. Cheers, • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 09:57, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not a problem Peter. --Saqib (talk) 11:00, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Contact Us

Can you provide some background on what the new "contact us" link is meant to be? In general if someone has a question they should be using the pub or a talk page, so I'm not sure we should be advertising an email address, and especially not in the left nav. Do you know who answers those emails? I was unaware that emails would get a response, so it might make sense to include that information, but I'm concerned with the current approach. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:26, 11 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

The emails actually go to m:OTRS, and I have access to the queue (as do a few others). Sometimes people like to email in questions (and some people have), but of course stuff like appealing a block or requesting edits usually gets referred back onwiki. --Rschen7754 19:28, 11 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
I would think that could go in a less prominent place, perhaps somewhere under the help page, since it is not a preferred method for interaction on most subjects. Texugo (talk) 19:35, 11 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia and Commons do have a contact us page with e-mail address provided so I thought we're missing contact us page and we should publicise our e-mail address as well. I agree with you that questions should be asked on-wiki but what if one don't want to post a question on-wiki? --Saqib (talk) 19:38, 11 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) Since email should be used for a very rare number of cases I'm going to remove this from the left nav, otherwise I'm concerned that new users with a question will use email as their primary method of communication instead of asking questions on-wiki. I think there is probably value in a "contact us" page, but it would need to be more akin to w:Wikipedia:Contact us that makes clear that email is to be used only in cases where on-wiki communication is not a viable option. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:39, 11 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
You're right. --W. Frankemailtalk 21:39, 11 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sorry!

Hi Saqib! Sorry for not correcting Purplebackpack89's banner on sight - I know what to do in future now! How's your convalescence going? :) --Nick talk 19:43, 15 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

That's absolutely fine Nick. No need to be sorry. I just thought maybe User:Purplebackpack89 won't be able to crop the image but anyway xe did it. I had check up yesterday, fortunately cast has been removed but not yet allowed to use the affected foot for a month more until it is fully healed. Btw, I wonder if you noticed my itinerary. --Saqib (talk) 20:00, 15 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Bon voyage, Saqib!

(You wrote that you're "...planning to visit all the chapters of Wikimedia throughout the world. The purpose of my visit is to meet the local Wikimedians community and spreading the word about Wikivoyage. There are some 40 chapters currently exist in the world, with at least one chapter on every continent (except Antarctica). I can't tell where the journey will end but I will start it from Germany. Wikimedia's German chapter was the first chapter to be created and currently the biggest chapter with over 6,000+ members.") --W. Frankemailtalk 20:08, 15 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Frank but right now it is a daydream and I really wish if I would able to make it happen sooner or later. --Saqib (talk) 20:17, 15 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yangyang

Hi Saqib, as part of my quest to clean up the South Korean region of Gangwon I was going to create the city article for Yangyang. However I noticed that you actually deleted this on the 23rd September 2013. Do you have any objection if I create again with some content? --Andrewssi2 (talk) 10:59, 16 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sure, go ahead and re-create it. --Saqib (talk) 11:07, 16 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Difficult User

Hi Saqib, I noticed user 1.120.3.182‎ is making a lot of changes to the map making expedition that you are rejecting. I'm fairly sure this is an Australian based user that we've have issue with in the past. See: User_talk:Ikan_Kekek#Same commuting Ozzie

Since they have been unresponsive in the past, there may be a case for a user ban for a few days to get their attention. What to you think? --Andrewssi2 (talk) 12:05, 19 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Andrew, this user actually never responded to any of the messages that have been left on the talk pages of any of the IPs that xe has edited from and Xe still adding incomplete listings using different IP addresses. This is quite frustrating. --Saqib (talk) 12:32, 19 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, although most of their changes were annoying and never seemed malicious. I think the sustained editing on the map expedition may be reason enough however for a 3 day ban? (Just maybe get their attention) --Andrewssi2 (talk) 12:39, 19 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
