Hey Evan, this isn't quite a Wikivoyage topic. :) My sister is moving to Montreal for a co-op in January, I wonder if you could give me some tips on the housing market.

Is the market tight? Should she sort it out before before she arrives? She's looking for something close to the Metro. Which neighbourhoods near the Metro should she stay out of?

Sure. You're right that it's not Wikivoyage-related, but: I think the key thing for anglophones is to learn enough French that you can read the French-language rental ads. The ads in the English-language newspapers are slim, and they concentrate on anglophone areas of town, which tend to be more expensive. I've found a couple of apartments here, usually through the Journal de Montreal or the free weekly Voir. But there are two other French dailies (La Presse and Le Devoir) and another weekly (Ici, with weak housing listings).

For neighborhoods, check the map. The farther "south" (towards the St. Laurent), the better chance of being near the metro. The closer to the Old Town, the better the neighborhoods are... up until you actually get downtown. Really, the only scuzzy part of town is on the Ste Catherine corridor from, say, de Lorimier up to University. Most young people tend to stay in N.D.G. (anglophone), the Plateau (francophone), St. Henri (mixed), Hochelaga (really francophone).

I read your message on my Wikipedia talk page. Actually I don't like too much the Creative Commons Attribution non-Commercial Share-Alike licence for the text, even if for the images it's not so bad. But as I see now, your licence is different and I don't have anything against it. Your licence allows commercial use, which I think is quite useful for the strength of a project. You could use my images even if the commercial use were forbidden, so go on if you find something interesting on my gallery (or if you want to commission some photo I'll take during my promenades). Hey Evan! Just a note that I'm still interested in advocating for Wikivoyage's admission as a Wikimedia project (that is, if you guys want to). It is likely that the GFDL will not be the only licence Wikimedia uses for newer projects such as Wikinews, so that is no longer a reason to stay apart. Everything would run the same way here as they are now; the only difference would be swapping the CC logo at the bottom of each page with the Wikimedia project logo and the fact that all the behind the scenes stuff (such as hosting, software upgrades and fundraising) would be taken care of by the foundation. Being part of Wikimedia would also mean a much higher profile for this project, since it will be listed as a sister project to Wikipedia and geographic Wikipedia articles would have eye-catching boxes leading to corresponding Wikivoyage pages. So I've been trying to help out on the vfd front a bit. I understand why the magic buttons don't appear on my browser (I think) and I actually prefer it that way. What a great idea this project is! Thanks to you and all of the Wikivoyage contributors. I'll be traveling and working in West Africa in the spring, and will be sure to contribute articles on some of the nations not yet covered in depth.

Hi Evan. Are the modifications you've made to MediaWiki publicly available? For Wikicities, I'd like to have inter-project links to Wikipedia etc appear in the sidebar like you do here but I don't know enough about PHP to do this myself. (WT-en) Angela 13:31, 22 Dec 2004 (EST)

It doesn't require any modifications to MediaWiki. You just have to add the Wikimedia Interwiki records to the interwiki table, set their iw_local flag to "1" (true). Finally, you have to add the interwiki prefix you used to the language names array in Language.php. I also changed the string "Other languages" to "Other sites/languages", since that makes more sense.

I hope that helps. I haven't heard of Wikicities, but I'd be interested to see it. From the name, I'm guessing that it's either a city guides, a la Open Guides, or a free wiki hosting service, like Wiki + Geocities. If it's the first, I'd suggest you coordinate your effort with the Open Guides guys. If it's the second, I'd suggest changing the name, as Yahoo! is pretty well known for enforcing its trademarks, and it'd be a shame to have to change the name. Wikicities.com is a site with aim of building wiki communities, rather than being a pure hosting company. The wikis are freely hosted, and can be on any topic that would attract a large enough community.
