Autoblock exploitation
Let's say a blocked user takes advantage of autoblocking being enabled on their block to prevent other users from editing, such as by hitting the edit button on random pages on the wiki they are blocked from on every IP address they go to in order to deliberately trigger an autoblock, thus preventing those users from editing as well, and repeating it over and over as they physically relocate to different IPs. How would you, as a steward who can lock accounts, respond?
P.S. As far as I know, attempting to enforce your block on other users, actualized or not, will result in further sanctions. Faster than Thunder (talk) 16:35, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
- In general, if a user is being excessively disruptive to projects, despite attempts to curtail them with blocks, locks may be considered for a terms of use violation. Such users may be referred to us at SRGL. While autoblocks can be useful, administrators may decide to not use them when the targeted user is using a shared address. Most of the time when a situation you described arises, it is due to the disruptive user using proxies, which can then just be blocked due to being proxies. — xaosflux Talk 17:21, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

DreamRimmer bot
Bot has rollback
right but is still triggering this filter. Any idea why this is happening? – DreamRimmer ◆ 11:38, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
- Special:AbuseFilter/examine/log/3256137 shows that rollback was not presented to the abusefilter. My suspicion is that your bot's oauth consumer or bp grant doesn't have the rollback permission included on it. — xaosflux Talk 13:10, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
- You are right. I enabled rollback in BP and it worked. Thanks! – DreamRimmer ◆ 13:25, 15 May 2025 (UTC)

Log-in verification
Hi Xaosflux, I think you may help me again. Since a few days, every time I log in the following message appears: "You need to verify your login. A verification code has been sent to your email address, please enter that code here."; I have to check my email box and insert the code each time. The last time I used to log in a few months ago this didn't happen, although the OS of my PC and the IP addresses are the same as then. I don't know why this think is continuing happening but it's becoming a bit annoying. Is there a way to get rid of it or will I have to insert a code every time I'll log in from now on? Thank you for any suggestions you'll be able to give me Xaosflux. Junghiano (talk) 22:10, 6 June 2025 (UTC)
- A couple of things to check: (1) you have a working email, so that is good - make sure it is a confirmed email (look in Special:Preferences). (2) Make sure you are not blocking cookies or localstorage. After you pass that login check, a cookie should help you bypass it next time. (3) Be sure you aren't using something that ignore cookies, such as "private browsing"/"incognito" modes. — xaosflux Talk 22:23, 6 June 2025 (UTC)
- Nothing worked, so I tried the following steps: (1) I logged in connecting the same device to a different WiFi network: the verification request appeared; (2) I logged in connecting to the same WiFi network a different device: the verification request appeared; (3) I asked an acquaintance of mine to use my device connected to my WiFi network to log in with his own account: he wasn't requested any verification. I think that the problem is about my account, not my device nor my network. Is there a proper page (or email address) to ask for help about this issue? Junghiano (talk) 09:45, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
My locked login
Hi there, Sorry for bothering you here, it just might be more effective interacting here. I really do not understand why the login for my original account requires email verficiation. It never happened before and it's really frustrating. I can't remember my email address, neither am I sure there actually is one (I might have removed it altogether!). I would greatly appreciate if anyone could help me unlock the access to my account with which I have edited for almost 20 years. Shshshsh3 (talk) 20:10, 8 June 2025 (UTC)
- I replied to you at Stewards' noticeboard, this is not something that our volunteers can manage. — xaosflux Talk 21:02, 8 June 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for your kind reply! Is there anyone who can at least tell me which email address I was using? I've switched a number of them throughout the years, and I'm sure I could get into any of them if I can just see which email address I was using on my account. DinhHuy2010
Hey! I think you meant to add Global IP block exemption to DinhHuy2010 as per the ticket, but it looks like Global temporary account viewer was added by mistake. I've fixed it by giving them GIPBE with the same expiry date and removing the temporary account viewer right. —MdsShakil (talk) 11:57, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
hello
Hello Xaosflux, I have recently filed a case at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Sandesh9822. I suspect that the user has used multiple accounts not only on English Wikipedia but also on Marathi Wikipedia, including in Requests for Adminship. I have included the reasons for my suspicion in the filing. Please review it and guide me on where and how to report this issue further. SachinSwami (talk) 10:06, 13 June 2025 (UTC)

Question about a banned user's TPA and motives
Hey there. Earlier today, my device was stuck for a little while in an IP range that'd been blocked for lock evasion, I think by Shāntián Tàiláng. Curious, I did some research & found this list of reasons that you banned him.
Anyway, I want to ask: Seriously― don't you think his harassment & exportation of off-wiki discussions could've been easily solved by restoring his TPA wherever he was blocked? I got the nagging feeling that revoking his TPA on each wiki might have been what drove his inability to accept boundaries in the first place. Since he couldn't discuss anything at all on one wiki, he felt he had to take the fight to another wiki (which is not a good thing to do, but you get the idea).
That, along with his self-confessed inability to "get the message" [such as, not to speak to certain users] unless it was explicitly pointed out to him. I don't know if he had, or has, any spite towards anyone, but if he did, then he most likely wasn't as spiteful as you, Taivo, EPIC, Pppery, and HingWahStreet made him out to be. 2600:1003:B137:7045:0:30:9478:9301 17:23, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
- When a user exhausts the community's patience, they may be disinvited. The time to bring up other options would have been during the prior discussion. — xaosflux Talk 18:44, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
