This welcoming template should always be substituted on to an anonymous unregistered IP user's talk page rather than just being simply transcluded. It will be signed with your user signature automagically and date your welcome too:

Optionally, you can also include the name of an article as a first variable, separated by a pipe character. You can also include an optional message as a second variable if you use another pipe character, followed by your message, using this syntax:

If both the optional parameters are left blank, below is what will be written on the User Talk page after substitution (your own signature with date stamp will replace the --~~ part right at the end):-

However, even more important than following every guideline is to PLUNGE FORWARD and write something useful – someone might be along to help with the proper formatting later if we're both lucky...

Add your home town, or a place you know well or write some insider tips - but don't use first person pronouns.

It would be great if you would create your own user account on Wikivoyage because it would then provide you with various benefits:

1. easier communication with other writers about your edits and travel tips via your very own User Talk page, even if your future visits are from another IP
2. your choice of thumbnail image display size by setting the default size they will display at (in your user Preferences)
3. gain kudos for your contributions, which will then all be attributed to you rather than just an IP address
4. your contributions will become more trusted as you become familiar to other Wikivoyagers as a frequent editor with a history they can check
5. you'll not need to pass a recaptcha test each time you add an external link
6. protect your privacy — your IP address will be displayed in the history of articles if you are not editing from a registered account, but registering will allow you to maintain your privacy behind an alias
7. get your very own watchlist — a list of pages for which you want to keep track of future changes
8. become a Project:Docent — if you know a destination well and would like to share your knowledge
9. Preferences menu — customize your Wikivoyage experience.
