Apostrophes and quotation marks

[edit]

Use "straight" apostrophes and quotation marks ('/"), not curly ones (/...). Do not use accent marks or backticks (`) as apostrophes. Do not use accent marks, backticks (`text´), low-high („ “) or guillemet (« ») marks as quotation marks (except when such marks are internal to quoted non-English text).

Plurals should not have apostrophes, which are used for the genitive.

  • "in the 1800s"; "1920s Jazz Age"
  • "apples and oranges"; "apples' and oranges' taste"
