Molfetta is an italian town of 59 418 inhabitants. The city is located 25 km northwest of Bari on the coast of the Adriatic sea. The best season to visit this city is in summer, since there's a mild and pleasant climate with little rainfall. The commune territory extends towards the Murge and borders the territory of Terlizzi to the south. Molfetta has always been a territory with an agricultural vocation, especially in the XX century; later, a large industrial area was created. It is the third town of the metropolitan city of Bari for number of inhabitants.

What to see

Molfetta has a lot of old buildings, especially churches! The most important Church is the San Corrado Cathedral, situated in Largo Chiesa Vecchia, right in front of the Port. It is considered as the symbol of Molfetta and it was built between 1150 and 200. Another beautiful attraction is the San Domenico Church, located in Via S. Domenico 54. The church and the convent were built starting from 1636 in honor of San Domenico di Soriano. The main surface is in Baroque style and, inside the church, we find two great examples of Baroque art, including a canvas by Corrado Giaquinto depicting the Madonna del Rosario. Another must-see is the Museo Civico Archeologico del Pulo, located in Via Mayer. It's an historic structure dating back to the eighteenth century with a diameter varying from 170 up to about 180 meters and a perimeter exceeding 500 meters.In this structure were found artifacts such as vases and Neolithic rudimentary tools and also human remains dating back to the Stone Age and the Bronze Age. Torrione Passari is an historical place of Molfetta located in Via Sant'Orsola 9, in the historic center. It was originally a gunboat and later it became a watchtower. Cala di San Giacomo is the oldest port of the city. It is said that this place was used as an active port from the twelfth to the middle of the eighteenth century, because at the time it was larger and offered shelter to sailors. Il Calvario is a small structure built in 1856 in neoclassical style on an octagonal base and articulated on three floors for a total of 20 meters. Each year, on the night between 30 and 31 March, the inhabitants of the city meet on the steps of the structure to recite the Hail Mary to the Virgin Mary.

Where to eat

When it comes to food, this precious city has a lot offer!

Since the city is situated on the coastline, the main dishes are fish based. You have to try it, you won’t regret it!

But as I mentioned before, this city has a lot to offer: that’s why you can also find many meat based delicious dishes.

On Christmas Holidays, people from Molfetta prepare “I mille infranti”, typically called “u tridd” by locals. This is a homemade pasta made of flour, eggs, parsley, salt and grated parmesan and usually cooked in meat broth.

Molfetta is also famous for its delightful pastries: people love to eat “Cartellate” during Christmas holidays which are made of flour, olive oil, sugar, eggs and white wine. These pastries are dipped in a bittersweet sauce and they will literally melt in your mouth!
