Kyushu ESL Wikivoyage project[edit]

The Kyushu ESL Wikivoyage project is a ongoing project for the Eibei (American and English Studies) department of Kumamoto Gakuen University, conducted through the fall term of the Computers and English course. The course has a small number of students (from 5-10) and ideally, has approximately equal numbers of Japanese students and foreign students.

Goals[edit]

This project has several separate, but related, goals. The first goal is to update and complete the Kumamoto page as well as other Kyushu pages in Wikivoyage. Japanese students are encouraged to write and edit articles about their hometowns or other Kyushu locations. The University has been asked to provide a budget so that foreign exchange students along with their Japanese counterparts can visit a location in Kyushu for research.

This links to the second goal of creating opportunities for foreign exchange students and KGU students to get to know each other and hopefully stay in touch after they leave the university.

The third goal is to create a wiki at http://www.kumamoto-i.org/ for foreigners living and working in Kumamoto, linked with the Yahoo email list located at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kumamoto-i/. The list is a project started by a colleague of mine at KGU and it is hoped that by extracting the information from the mail list and putting it in wiki form, it will make it more accessible. Students will use the experience gained in working on the Wikivoyage site to create and update kumamoto-i wiki installation.

Editing location[edit]

Each term, a different location in Kyushu will be the focus of the class. This article will be located at User:(WT-en) Joseph tomei/project1. At the end of the term, the information will be integrated into Wikivoyage. Students will also be encouraged to work independently on Kyushu articles, especially with reference to their hometowns.

Key learning objectives[edit]

The primary goal is for students to be able to develop computer skills. A further goal is to gain experience in collaborative writing. Finally, that both Japanese and foreign students will learn a bit more about Kyushu.
