It is strange that we do not provide a translation of "Western Plains" into German. A translator site gives me "westliche Ebenen", but a search on German Wikipedia takes me to articles about the U.S. Plains states. Ground Zero (talk) 12:06, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
- Our regions in this area don't link up with real-world regions. The Western Plains are one of those constructs. The closest thing I can find is Südwestliches Niedersachsen (Southwestern Lower Saxony). This region is used by the state of Niedersachsen themselves when it comes to tourism, but isn't widely used either in favour of the four subregions it's comprised of. In comparison with our region, however, it leaves out Landkreis Diepholz (deWiki), which we don't currently have articles for. I think Südwestliches Niedersachsen is just the best translation you could give in this case. Maybe Westliche Niedersachsische Ebenen if you want to stick to the Western Plains, adding Niedersachsische to avoid confusion with the USA's Plains states.
- The reason there's no real name for this region is historical. It was never really a region as such, and for most of its history consisted of many smaller independent states. When areas were part of a larger state, then that state's capital was often outside of the region itself (most notably Münster and Hannover).

- It looks fine this way. I'd personally want to reorganise the regions in this corner of Niedersachsen altogether, since having them based in reality makes writing their region articles a lot easier. As for articles, this region is nowhere near populated enough to warrant doing that though. Still, to have my thoughts out there: I'd make the Oldenburg Land a stand-alone region (taking parts from Elbe-Weser, East Frisia and Western Plains). Make a joint region for Osnabrück, Osnabrück Land, Emsland and Bentheim named something along the lines of Southwest Lower Saxony, and add a separate region for Diepholz. That does, however, give problems in regards to WV:7+2 for Lower Saxony.
