You’re right that the article was limited, but the OpenStreetMap trail data needed fixing first before it could really be expanded. That’s now been done, so there’s more to work with. As an aside here, the most important thing that needs improvement for hiking trails on Wikivoyage is the OSM integration. The relation in OSM has a lot (most) of the points of interest. It looks like the POI thing might be complicated. Proper rendering of geolines shouldn't be.
