Understand

[edit]

Lower Bengal is an eastern extension to the North Indian plains. It is based around the Hooghly River, which is known in its upper reaches as the Bhagirathi River. The Hooghly is the lifeline of the entire South Bengal, with many of its major towns being on the banks of the river.

The name "Lower Bengal" originally referred to a British-era province of the Bengal Presidency, comprising the present-day West Bengal, Bangladesh, North-Eastern India, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. In later years, the province came to be called simply "Bengal", and the place name "Lower Bengal" became restricted to the lowlands of the province, as opposed to the western plateau and the northern hills.
