Ribadeo

Ribadeo is a town in Galicia in northwest Spain. It's on the coast at the east edge of the region, separated by the broad river from the region of Asturias. In 2024 the population was 10,000.

Understand

[edit]

The coast of Galicia is riddled by rias, river valleys inundated 8000 years ago by rising sea levels. Each ria outlet had one or more ports, which tended to specialise as the years went on. Ribadeo particularly traded with the Baltic, especially in liquor, until vessels outgrew its harbours and trade shifted to Gijón. It's now just a leisure port.

Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo (1926-2008), Prime Minister of Spain in 1981/82, spent his last years here and is buried in Ribadeo cemetery.

Ribadeo Turismo the visitor information centre is at Rúa de Dionisio Gamallo Fierros 7, just south of Praza de España, open Tu-Sa 10:00-12:00, 14:00-19:00.

Santiago de Compostela (SCQ IATA) is the best-served airport in the region, as tourists and pilgrims converge from all over west Europe. Take the bus into city centre for onward transport.

A Coruña (LCG IATA) is slightly closer, with flights from Madrid and Barcelona but not much internationally.

By road from Madrid follow A-6 (toll) to Lugo, then branch north to the coast on N640.

There's no direct bus from Madrid, change at Oviedo. Two Alsa buses a day from Oviedo are direct, taking two hours via Gijon and Aviles, and continuing to Lugo, Vilaba, A Coruña and Santiago de Compostela. More frequent local buses run from Aviles.

1 Ribadeo bus station is a dismal place 1 km north of town centre.

2 Ribadeo railway station is on the FEVE metre-gauge railway that rattles and grinds along the Spanish coast all the way to the French border. Four trains a day trundle from Ferrol, taking 3 hours with 50 stops, and continue to Oviedo, another 3 hr 15 min and 30 stops. FEVE is now part of Renfe the Spanish mainline railway operator, so look there for timetables and tickets.
