San Miguel National Park
San Miguel National Park (Parque nacional San Miguel) is a protected natural area in the Atlantic Coast region in eastern Uruguay. It is the site of the Fuerte de San Miguel, an historic stone coastal defense fortress established by the Spanish in 1734.

History

The park was created as part of the Park Service of the Uruguayan Army in 1937. In 1991, it was put under civilian administration and became part of the Uruguayan national parks system.
Landscape
[edit]The park includes coastal beaches, rolling grass-covered hills, and wooded areas of forest.
Flora and fauna
[edit]Many kinds of mammals can be found in the park including white-tailed deer and capuchin monkeys.

[edit]Driving is the best way to get to the park.
By car
[edit]From Montevideo, it is about a 4-hour drive to the park. Take Route 5 north to Route 24, then west on Route 24, which reaches the park just before the border crossing to Brazil.
Fees and permits
[edit]Entrance to the park is free. No permits are required.

[edit]- 1 Creole and Indigenous Museum (Museo Criollo y Indigena). Daily 09:00 - 18:00. Historical museum with displays that explain colonial life during the Spanish Empire with galleries focusing on transportation, textile manufacturing, agriculture, manufacturing through the 1700s, and military life in the fortresses and outposts. Several exhibits describe indigenous cultures of the region. Free.
Do
[edit]- Hiking - the park features several marked hiking trails, including:
- Sendero del Bosque (Forest Trail) - As the name implies, the trail winds through forested areas of the park and is an easy trail that is good for wildlife viewing and birdwatching.
- Sendero del Rio (River Trail) - Follows the course of the river with views of the water and shoreline. This is an easy trail that will take about 1-2 hours to walk.
