Understand
[edit]Location
[edit]Provideniya, one of the easternmost towns in Russia, has a population slightly under 2,000. At 64 degrees north, it is extremely close to the Arctic circle. The town was formally established in 1946.
Climate
[edit]Provideniya has an Arctic climate. Although temperatures can pass 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21.1 degrees Celsius) in mid-summer, temperatures generally stay below 60 (15.6 degrees Celsius) and above -10 degrees Fahrenheit (-23.3 degrees Celsius). Precipitation is mid-range, being about 30 inches (762mm), although much of this is snow.
Get in
[edit]1 Provideniya Bay Airport (Провидения Бухта). ChukotAVIA runs a weekly turboprop from **Anadyr** (April–October, 2 h). Seats sell out fast; buy through a Russian agent or charter the whole aircraft. Charter flights also connect to **Lavrentiya** and **Egvekinot** when weather allows.
Expedition cruises (Heritage Expeditions, Silversea, Seabourn) call three to five times each summer on Bering Sea itineraries. The ship’s agent handles border permits.
A seasonal helicopter and fast‑boat link to Nome, Alaska has run sporadically; check political conditions first.
