Xiamen/Haicang

Haicang (海沧; Hái-chhng in Minnan, Hǎicāng in Mandarin) is a suburb of Xiamen.

Administratively, Haicang is part of Xiamen but geographically, it is distinct. It is west of downtown on the mainland, connected to Xiamen island by a bridge. There is a map in the Xiamen article. However, unlike some other mainland suburbs, Haicang is not yet on the Xiamen BRT (bus rapid transit) system.

It the last few years, Haicang has been growing quickly. There are many new buildings, many of them highrise and some quite luxurious.

The usual route to Haicang is to go to Xiamen and cross a bridge.

Haicang can now be reached via Line 2 of the Xiamen Metro.

Buses from the South, e.g. from Guangdong or Zhangzhou, often have a stop in Haicang en route to Xiamen.

The main ferry terminal is at Songyu Wharf (嵩屿码头). Ferries depart from Xiamen Wharf No. 1 (厦门第一码头) on the west coast of Xiamen Island.

There are taxis, ride hailing apps and buses.

Built under the Southern Song Dynasty in 1151 during the Shaoxing period, the temple is dedicated to Wu Ben (Wu Zhenren). He was a physician and was later deified as Baosheng Dadi (Great Emperor Who Protects Life). According to local tradition, Wu Ben practiced medicine in the area and used local hot springs to treat patients. Qingjiao Ciji Ancestral Temple is one of the larger folk religious sites in Xiamen and an important historical and cultural monument. It is widely referred to as the “First Ciji Temple of Fujian and Taiwan,” reflecting its significance in Baosheng Dadi worship in the region. Riyuegu Hotsprings Park is a large-scale hot spring facility opened in 2003. The park covers approximately 65,000 m² and contains more than 40 types of hot spring themed pools and related facilities spread across landscaped grounds. There are outdoor, sheltered or indoor hot spring pools, swimming pools, water therapy pools, steam and sauna rooms, heated stone areas, family-friendly water play zones, dining, rest and other leisure facilities. Interactive farm and petting zoo designed for families with young children and offers close-range interaction with a variety of animals. Visitors can feed deer, alpacas, goats, sheep, toitoises and birds etc. Most areas are outdoors with open lawns and play spaces for children. Basic food options available. A large modern shopping mall in Maluan Bay New Town area of Haicang, opened Oct 2025. The complex has 6 floors and contains retail, services, entertainment and dining options. Haicang is on the main highway between Xiamen and Zhangzhou, so either of those is an obvious next stop.
