Summary

Description
English: Exterior of the Shanghai Museum.

The museum was founded in 1952, and contains over 120,000 cultural relics; the current building was opened in 1996. The building displays a circular upper story above a squared base, inspired by traditional symbolism: "Heaven is round, Earth is square." Four projecting arches, one of which is seen here, are said to refer to the loop handles on ancient bronze vessels (ding).
