DescriptionRichard Rowland Kirkland Monument in the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.jpg
English: Monument honoring Richard Rowland Kirkland in the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park honoring his bravery and humanitarian actions during the Battle of Fredericksburg. The monument was crafted by Felix de Weldon (dedicated 1965) and was placed on land previously owned by Mary Washington College. The land was later transferred to the National Park Service in 1987. The inscription says: "In memoriam / Richard Rowland Kirkland / Co. G, 2nd South Carolina Volunteers / C. S. A. / At the risk of his life, this American / soldier of sublime compassion brought / water to his wounded foes at / Fredericksburg. The fighting men on / both sides of the line called him / 'The Angel of Marye's Heights'".
