Summary
DescriptionFes el Bali gates and neighbourhood names.png
English: This map was adapted, cropped, and modified from an earlier map uploaded by Omar-toons (Carte Enceintes de Fes.PNG).
The labels were remade with English transliterations (with some exceptions where the French spelling is used). The names of the gates were added as well, plus the names of the historic neighbourhoods listed by Roger Le Tourneau in his 1949 book ("Fès avant le protectorat: étude économique et sociale d'une ville de l'occident musulman"), which remains one of the main historical reference works for the city. The list of neighbourhoods, and the map showing their locations, is found on pages 118-119 of that book. The locations shown here follow that map, but they are merely approximate and they don't show the somewhat irregular borders of the neighbourhoods which are visible in Le Tourneau's map. The purpose here was to give a general idea of the toponyms and their general locations. There are other local toponyms and neighbourhood names that probably exist today (e.g. Ain Azliten) which are not shown here, because I've limited myself to those listed in Le Tourneau's book in order to avoid original research.
Lastly, I had to hand-draw the river by basing myself on Le Tourneau's map again as well as checking with Google sattelite imagery; the result is not perfect, but is a rough approximation of the river's path (the dotted line indicates the long southern portion which is now underground).
