Summary
DescriptionCentral columned street, Ancient Edessa (7120783719).jpg
This central avenue ran between the city's nothernand southern gates. This road was flanked by covered galleries (stoai), 5,20m wide, their roofs supported by pillars and columns. Feeding into this central avenue were the side streets (3,50m wide) and narrower lanes that framed the urban blocks of buildings, most of which date from the Early Christian period. The ground floor rooms of these buildings, with entrances from the covered galleries and storage jars in the interior, were commercial premises, with living quarters on the floors above. One of these shops proved to have been a glassmaker's workhop.
