Description
Nederlands: Foto. Makassar was de grootste stad van Celebes. In 1930 had de stad bijna 85.000 inwoners, waarvan bijna 3.500 Europese. In de Buitengewesten (alle eilanden buiten Java) was alleen Palembang groter. De stad was snel gegroeid, sneller dan veel Indische steden. In 1890 stond Makassar nog op de vierde plaats van de steden in de Buitengewesten, en had het, naast Palembang, ook Padang en Bandjermasin moeten laten voorgaan. Die groei kwam niet zo zeer voort uit de productie van de regio zelf als wel door de rol van Makassar in de handel, waaronder veel doorvoerhandel. Op de foto de straat waar de markt (pasar) was (of geweest was) met rechts een opvallende classicistische gevel. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). De Passarstraat te Makassar.
