For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme.
Leipzig, Völkerschlachtdenkmal, Kuppel Zentralbild Koch 9.10.1963 Zum 150. Jahrestag der Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig Vor 150 Jahren fand vom 16. bis 19. Oktober 1813 bei Leipzig die Völkerschlacht statt. An der Schlacht beteiligten sich ca. 500000 Soldaten. Den 190000 Mann Napoleons standen im Kampf etwas mehr als 300000 Verbündete gegenüber. 22000 Russen, 16000 Preußen, 12000 Osterreicher und 300 schweden fielen bei Leipzig. Zur Erinnerung und Mahnung an die Schlacht wurde das Völkerschlachtdenkmal errichtet. Mit seiner Höhe von 91 Metern ist es das größte Erinnerungsmal in Europa. Nach einem Entwurf von Bruno Schmitz wurde es aus Granitporphyr errichtet. Die Bildwerke schufen Franz Metzner und Christian Behrens. UBz: Blick in die Kuppel des Dankmals. In 11 übereinander angeordneten Ringen sind 324 Reiter in Lebensgröße abgebildet.
