A modern view ... The original publication of this engraving was accompanied by the following explanatory note ... "[* The annexed view of Botany Bay, represents the Supply, &c. at anchor, and the Sirius with her convoy coming into the bay.], which would have been better phrased as [* The annexed view of Botany Bay, represents the early arrivals § at anchor, and the Sirius with her convoy coming into the bay.], as the two-masted brig H.M.A.T.§§ Supply is actually not visible. However, further artistic licence portrays open gun-ports on the vessel alleged to be the Supply, whose armaments were mounted on deck. The only First Fleet ship with gun-ports was H.M.S. Sirius, which is purported to be in the distance. Additionally, Sirius's cannon were all stowed below decks, not mounted on the gun-deck, which was crammed full of cargo ... gun-ports therefore closed.. § H.M.A.T. Supply and transports Alexander, Friendship and Scarborough §§ His Majesty's Armed Tender |
