Acts 27 reports the events of Sept/Oct 58/59[2] during which Paul, after a two-year detention in Caesarea, boarded a ship of Adramittium as prisoner, accompanied by two Christians, Luke and Aristarchus, as traveling companions. They then crossed the sea from Sidon and Cyprus and reached Mira in Licia, from where the ship likely continued its journey along the Asian coast to its home port in Mycia, north of Ephesus. Therefore, Julius, the officer of the imperial regiment, secured an Alexandrian ship with Italy as its destination, and the prisoners were transferred. With difficulty they were able to reach the sheltered southern coastline of Crete and navigate it to Fair Havens, near Lasea. Here the anchor was lifted again and they sailed, aided by a light breeze, along the coast with Port Phenice, 40 miles distant, as their next destination. Before long however, a strong wind or so-called Eurakilon, carried the ship with its 276 passengers offshore on a hazardous adventure.
